Absolutely zero comparison.
The 1998 results came about when the Bowden family cherry picked an obscure offensive coordinator from Glenville State College in West Virginia to join Tommy on Willow Street.
A completely scheme driven offensive onslaught was installed on the '97 & '98 teams. The lipstick was put on the pig that no one had an answer on how to stop. If the defense made two stops, we won!
Since it was purely scheme driven it was open to access for all. A wham bam thank you M'am if ever there was one.

Both exciting seasons. Other than winning neither would compare to one another outside both had outstanding QB play.

Both teams were outstanding. The 1998 team couldn't help having a weak schedule, opponents are signed years in advance and you can't control your conference teams' strength or weakness. Our offense was dominant, unstoppable & balanced- 303 yds/game passing, 202 yds/game rushing. Sean King had 36 TDs & 6 ints.

We beat the crap out of teams that year we were supposed to beat, which is what you'd expect from a great team. We had huge leads after 3 quarters over most opponents & gave up 4th quarter points in garbage time, showing a final score not representative of what happened. This included the Liberty Bowl, 41-13 before BYU scored meaningless late TDs for a final of 41-27. Game 1 vs Cincy, 52-14 before winding up 52-34. Many games like that.

The 2022 team on the other hand knew how to win critical games vs high quality opponents, which is all that matters against a tougher schedule. They won on the road vs Big 12 champ Kansas St- huge. Must-win victory on the road over Cincinnati, I think they had a 15 game home win streak or something. Huge. Convincing win in AAC title game vs UCF team that had beaten you. Huge. Cotton Bowl comeback miracle win vs Southern Cal & their Heisman Trophy winner (were they PAC 12 champs). Huge. That’s 4 huge super high quality wins, 3 of them on the road; not many other teams in 2022 from any conference could've done that, period. A truly great team.

+1, but Cincy’s home win streak was 32 games until snapped by the Wave and the PAC 12’s champion for 2022 was the Utah Utes.
