Agreed. The combine is one of those things where you really have to shine, and participate in all the skills/measurements, unless you're injured. And from everything else he did, he surely didn't seem injured. Head-scratcher for sure.

He didn’t need to run since nobody questions his speed. You can see ha has the juice on tape, in pads, in a game situation. It isn’t a question that he is fast enough to play at the next level. So running the 40 at the combine can only hurt him. The other drills are where he needed to shine—but even with that, his senior bowl and his interviews are more important.

With speed being important to a running back's performance, many are curious to see how Tyjae Spears performs in the 40-yard dash at the combine. Most experts project a 40-yard dash time of around 4.4 seconds for the Tulane product.

I don't know what games you watched, but every time Tyjae broke a run, I watched him looking for the guy that was going to catch him from behind, and he was often caught from behind. Raw speed is not Tyjae's strength, he has a burst, shiftiness, and great vision. But he's been caught from behind numerous times. Look at his first carry of the second half of the Cotton Bowl. He had 10 yards on the field and was caught. I wanted to see if he could run a 4.4 as projected.

We should also remember that raw speed is not the be-all and end-all for any position. Do you know who was clocked at the fastest speed in the NFL over the past five years? Matt Brieda, while playing for the 49ers a few years ago was clocked at 26 MPH. This past season, nobody was clocked faster than 24 MPH. Matt Breida hasn't exactly become the next Walter Payton to my knowledge.

If he runs that fast a 40, he'll be one of the first RB's drafted, which is where he should be. I don't think he's that fast. I wonder if he's been working on his 40 the way Forte did? Starting and continued acceleration is what can be learned and turn a 4.6 into a 4.4. That 2/10ths of a second can mean millions of dollars in a rookie contract, which may be why he didn't run. Maybe he feels his training for the 40 isn't complete?

Does he need Hester? Or someone from IMG Training? Or even McClesky. Hester is the Strength and Conditioning coach. Forte went to a specialized program in Florida and improved his 40 time significantly, but he did it between the end of the season and the Senior Bowl (where he was also MVP). Tyjae didn't have that time off, he committed to playing in the Cotton Bowl (and what a show he put on!) If USC hadn't held the ball so damned long, I'm convinced Tyjae would hold the Cotton Bowl rushing record. I looked it up before the game, I believe it's 281. He got 205 I believe on just 17 carries. 6 or 7 carries more and he'd have it!
