I agree.

Actually, I was. And I was there as well. Not in Arlington today, but in Tulane Stadium in 1973. Still think this is a bigger win for the program. Beating LSU that night was great for the fans at the time, but it did nothing to further who we were.

No question. Was at all the big ones. This one trumps them all.
I posted all the ‘73 highlights on YT. Up until today that was the biggest. Today passed that one IMO.

If not for that win we may have given up on athletics sooner. Biggest crowd in the south for football. Both unbelievable wins!

I was at the 1973 LSU game, it was an extraordinary charged emotional night for a bitter rivalry. But in terms of significance to this program, vaulting Tulane football to a completely different level, winning over a near-miss playoff team QB'd by the (very deserving) Heisman winner who set a Cotton Bowl record for TD passes, whose team did not punt once. On a featured national stage.

The '73 game was between bitter rivals when the area was much more a 50-50 split. True bragging rights at stake. People we had to deal with on an everyday basis and get to shut them the fuck up. Both equally great wins.

I’m just glad I was at both the Dec 1, 1973 and the Jan 2, 2023 spectacles. Both were
spectacular, and both have burned hard core loyalty in many Tulane fans. In that sense, this season and today’s remarkable win might have rejuvenated a whole new
generation of Tulane fans—just what we need.

Agreed. The 1973 win over LSU did nothing for the national perception of Tulane.

The 1973 win showed we were relevant. It took away the loser label. It's silly to try and dis one of the greatest wins in program history. Both were glorious wins!

+1, and things were coming back in 1998 for fan interest until Cowen threw a bucket of cold water on that great season.

Easily #1
We just beat the #5 ranked program of all time in the Cotton Bowl to go 12-2

https://www.profootballhof.com/news/201 ... 150-years/

5. USC
67.25 | 9 national titles

College football royalty on the West Coast arrives on a white horse named Traveler. The Trojans rank in the top 10 of three of our five categories. Since Howard Jones established USC as a dominant program before World War II, USC's power has flowed way more than it has ebbed. John McKay and Pete Carroll both won a lot and escaped to the NFL, and the NCAA cleaned up after. History tells us that the Trojans' current sabbatical from the top of the game won't last long.

A roll back in time
https://crescentcitysports.com/remember ... or-tulane/
Tulane fans showed up from across the country by the tens of thousands to AT&T Stadium to watch arguably the greatest day in program history – a dramatic, come-from-behind, 46-45 victory Monday over Southern California in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

while not a bowl game. Tulane's beating Georgia @ TULANE stadium in 1972, 24-13 was one hell of a win.....the NY Times even covered the game

I wasn't alive for the '73 game against LSU, but this game definitely tops my list. On a national stage, prestigious New Year's Day bowl, storied opponent like USC, and seeing Green Wave nation turn out on such a stage. We took over Dallas this weekend and it showed yesterday at the game.

The win in 1973 did a lot in New Orleans and Louisiana. But there wasn't national attention at the time. Maybe it was bigger in the greater metro New Orleans area, but a fraction of the country knew or cared. The Cotton Bowl yesterday had 100x the impact nationally, and possibly more. The crowd that showed up in Arlington to support the Green Wave may not have been as many as were in Tulane Stadium that night in 1973, but they did more for the perception of Tulane football. Both were glorious wins, one was on a much bigger, and much more a coast-to-coast stage.

Another big benefit yesterday was LSU blowing out Purdue and probably causing a lot of people to switch to our game.

No question, this game got us more attention and broader exposure. During the game my phone was blowing up with people watching from across the country and even two people watching from the UK. All non-Tulanians. Other interactions this morning from my son's Doctor appt in Texas - the Doctor and the staff there all had watched the game and were pulling for Tulane. We then visited the Peter Millar store shopping and the girl at the checkout, non-football fan advised she watched the game with her family and they were amazed at that finish and how good the Tulane team was. Many people were off work yesterday and chose this game to watch as a family given the LSU / Purdue game was not compelling after the start. There was not this level of awareness coast to coast after the 1998 Liberty bowl.
