Wait, what's that? This is about UCLA. Who did you think I was talking about?

Image
The season opener attendance was 27,143, the smallest crowd in 41 years. The game began at 11:30 a.m. with triple-digit temperatures

Major points from a NYTimes article today about the budgetary travails at UCLA:
  • The football rebuild under Chip Kelly is proceeding with a big rebound. The Bruins are 8-1 and off to their best start since 2005 yet attendance is abyssmal
  • UCLA gives away tens of thousands of tickets to home games and is averaging 36,000 fans in a 91,000 seat stadium
  • UCLA gives away 25,000 free tickets per game. When the Bruins upset LSU last seaon before 68,123, over 29,000 free tickets were distributed
  • College football national attendance down for seventh consecutive season
  • Athletic budget exceeded a $103.1 million shortfalll at the end of 2021
  • Football donations fell to $8.4 million in 2021 from $16.4 million in 2020
  • Under Armour breached a 15-year $280 million contract with UCLA because of poor fan exposure.

Have you seen Bill Walton lobbying against the move out of the Pac-12, he makes some interesting points.

And people thought we were the only school giving away free tickets. And they really have no excuse. New Orleans is less than 400K people, LA County is just under 10 MILLION. Considering the size of their local pop, there's no excuse for not doing better.

Great post, Lantern! And, you got me too!!! Even the SEC teams can no longer come close to selling their 8,000 ticket allotment for away games. Is it the greatness of the new hi-definition televisions? Real attendance way down everywhere. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Smartphones making people lazy. Why go actually do something when you can watch an infinite number of entertainment options without having to get off your ass? Sad times.
