Reason??

Let's look at unbiased facts from Troy's defensive stats from 2021 prior to Woods as DC, and 2022 with Woods as DC
Point allowed per game: 26/17
lst Downs allowed: 226/276
Rushing Touchdowns: 15/15
Rushing yards per game: 143/119
Total Rushing yards: 1716/1673
Passing Touchdowns: 19/14
Passing Yards allowed per game: 194/206
Total Passing yards allowed: 2339/2896
Total Offense: 4055/4569
Sacks: 32/46

Mixed defensive stats pre-Wood and Wood as DC, decide based off of facts, then give educated opinions, I am neutral!!!
The ONLY stat in the list that matters is the first one. 26 to 17 ppg.

All the rest is meaningless. But if you do want a take from it, I see a defense that was much stingier on the ground, allowing the offense to build up big leads, and causing the other team to pass more to catch up, thus the increase in passing yards and total yards. And despite the 20% increase in passing yards, the passing touchdowns went DOWN from 19 to 14. I see nothing but positive in these numbers.
Good for you Robert analyzing data, is a plus don't have to agree but good analysis. But just like what came lst the chicken or the egg. If the offense is eating up the clock and scoring the defense is not on the field much and can tee offf when they are. Leave that for another day, Have a great Mardi Gras Weekend!!!

Troy football 2022 season.

Time of Possession:

Troy 30:30
Opp 29:30

Stats are everywhere gb. And the stats say the Troy offense wasn't "eating up the clock". TOP was almost exactly equal. Another positive for Woods as DC.

Just for comparison, Tulane's TOP for 2022 was 29:13, and that includes the Cotton Bowl. Without that one game, it was 30:07.

Left coaching for 3 years to be a stay at home dad so that his wife could do her medical residency.
Quite interesting defensive coach, played receiver in high school and college, started coaching as a receiver coach, must be a story as to why he switched to coaching the defense. Looking forward to seeing, seems to coach an aggressive defense. Turnovers win ball games and Willie success is tied to winning the turnover battle.
Nick Saban was a QB in high school and Belichick was a Center in college.

This is what's changed. And it seems like this is happening naturally almost in spite of lack of institutional commitment. But it really does seem like we're a good place to be right now.

One thing I've learned is despite how I respect the SunBelt and think there's a lot of good programs there, that conference got shafted in the TV deals. I think we made as much back in C-USA ten years ago as their making now. And their football games are mostly streamed unless they're during the week. For the quality of product that conference puts on the field they're an absolute bargain. I point it out because I'm sure the money to be DC at Tulane is a lot more than at Troy.

Heard Coach Wood's presser today. He talked about implementing more of a 3-4 defensive scheme. I was kind of disappointed to hear that. I think a 4-3 tends to get more pressure and is better against the run unless you have some really outstandingly large D linemen. That's not what we have and not what we are likely to get. We'll see where it goes.

These Spring drills are going to be vitally important for our defense. Particularly for the DB's & D-Line. Last season we played a system where we kind of mirrored our opponent. It's going to be much different in 2023. When skillfully executed it's a beautiful thing to watch. Twitchy Twitchy Choo! What you gonna do?

Saw Fritz interview about the first day and he said the transfers in can really play! OT, WRs, LB, CB he called out.

So potentially we will have the best WR group since Fritz has been here!

I just hope our 2023 D can open-field tackle like our 2022 D did.

AMEN!

We saw a TON of plays where our secondary made a beautiful 1 on 1 tackle in the open field. In years past those were missed or slipped and big plays resulted. Our tackling improvement was the biggest reason we gave up fewer big plays this past season than any in the 40+ years I've been a Tulane fan.

The tackling was outstanding last year.
In 2022 they had time & space to pursue and execute the tackle. Going forward quite a few of our DB's will have their backs turned to the LOS.
In 2023 the D-lineman will play an aggressive two gap with the clock ticking on every snap. Our defensive backs & defensive lineman need to be very well coached at man-to-man coverage & two gap defensive line techniques tactics & execution.
If we can pull off this transformation, 2023 will be an entertaining year.

He could say nothing. He was not asked about it. He made a point to comment.
