In 1972 they won sailing previously. I think we did win a Tennis nation championship at some point. I’m intrigued to hear everyone’s else’s knowledge of previous NCs.
1959 we won the Mens Tennis team National Championship. A few individuals have also won titles in tennis.Bicoastalwave wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 8:51 am In 1972 they won sailing previously. Come on man, does anybody really give a f***about sailing or bowling or any of those other REQUIRED “sports “” in numbers to keep D1? Great for the participants but meaningless in the overall athletic picture. Let the administration wallow in their glory while we leave MILLIONS on the table in the sports that REALLY count! Just goes to show our true future!!

I was going to mention that but it’s a club sport.RobertM320 wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 9:29 amWomen's Rugby?HoustonWave wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 8:46 am Has Tulane ever previously won a National Championship in any NCAA sport?

Speaking of club sports, Tulane won the 1974 National Championship in sailing, before the NCAA sanctioned it as an official sport about 5 years ago.tpstulane wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 10:19 amI was going to mention that but it’s a club sport.RobertM320 wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 9:29 amWomen's Rugby?HoustonWave wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 8:46 am Has Tulane ever previously won a National Championship in any NCAA sport?

It's still not an NCAA sport. About 5 years ago Tulane made it a Varsity sport, it's been an extremely competitive club sport for decades. The decision to move it up to the Varsity level had nothing to do with scholarships to offset football, nor having enough sports to stay D1. It had everything to do with a financially successful Tulane Sailing Alumnae putting up the money to make it a varsity sport.HoustonWave wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 2:36 pm Speaking of club sports, Tulane won the 1974 National Championship in sailing, before the NCAA sanctioned it as an official sport about 5 years ago.

Wow. Had me fooled there. Oh well. Tennis remains our only NCAA National Championship for now.DfromCT wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 5:24 amIt's still not an NCAA sport. Nice recap of the event. There were 10-15 mph winds on the Lake that day.

Your right D, it still isn’t NCAA sanctioned—it’s some other overseeing body. But what’s weird is that the women on the sailing team does count for Title IX purposes even though there are no scholarships. Tulane always finds a way to adapt with as little investment as possible.DfromCT wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 5:24 amIt's still not an NCAA sport. Tulane is the University of Louisiana
There are D3 schools with endowments and other subsidies to compete in D1 sports. Johns Hopkins, a member of the D3 Centennial Conference, is a member of the Big 10 in lacrosse. And Franklin & Marshall, also in Centennial, is D1 in wrestling thanks to an alum endowment.DfromCT wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 5:24 amIt's still not an NCAA sport. If it ever decides to, Harvard could easily compete for the BCS championship.

No, he was 1952-55. Years ago I did an extensive interview with him that, unfortunately, never saw print. He was also a Rhodes Scholar.
