The movie was based on Red Adair's company, for which Boots Hanson and Coots Matthews were employees. Later Boots and Coots left Red Adair and started their own, very successful, wild well control company--Boots & Coots. I knew Coots and some of their employees. One of my high school buddies that worked for both companies has long term lung problems from this fire fighting days, and is now in his third week of fighting C-19, with a 105 temp. He's hanging on, but the situation is in doubt.golfnut69 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 5:45 pmThat movie was based on Red Adair of Houston, his company was called Boots n Coots if I rememebr correctlytpstulane wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 5:40 pm I have a funny story about John Wayne. Back in the early ‘80s I was working for Texaco Inc in the oil business and from time to time I would be approached by an independent drillers with the opportunity to invest personally in the drilling of new oil wells.
One day I decided to take up one of the guys and investigate the opportunity. I had just read the prospectus and I really liked the Louisiana drilling acreage that was in the plan I just needed one sign to pull the trigger and make the investment. No sooner than that I turned on the TV and the movie “Hellfighters” was on. If you’re not familiar with the movie it’s about skilled firefighters that extinguish raging oil field fires all over the world. The image on the screen was wellhead that just had a blowout spewing millions of gallons of oil and John Wayne was the fire fighter putting it out. I took that as a sign to make my investment. A month later the offering closed and the company drilled the well. I’ll never forget the phone call that the well hit a pay zone! I surely thought I’d be rich. Unfortunately it started producing water after about three to 4 months of production so I never fully recovered my investment. Damn John Wayne lol.

Renaming cities or institutions is just silly and a logistical nightmare. Honoring racists, bigots and murderers with statues is an easy fix.

Idk, that article is pretty weak. There is far more ample evidence that Columbus was an animal.Wave755 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2020 9:12 am In rebuttal for Columbus:

Yes, mostly quoting from Columbus’s diary. What was he going to write in his diary, that I killed a bunch or people for gold?

Not as weak as those two clown authors cited in your links above--one a privileged private prepster and Ivy Leaguer who probably has never been outside of New England, and who has already been duped at least once by a bogus scientific study, and the other the self proclaimed "Angriest Black Man in America"--yea, I'd believe what they writembawavefan12 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2020 9:39 amIdk, that article is pretty weak. Then post your thoughts publicly.
I am a proud italian american. Please give me reason why I can look my child in the eye and say Christopher Columbus should be celebrated in our public spaces as a hero.

I just grabbed the first two of hundreds upon hundreds of articles. A Harvard grad and a lawyer were the first two. “Probably has never been outside New England” grow the fuck up with that sort of comment you child. It is just an article and mine you the guy lives in NY and apparently spends half his days in DC, but whatever not the point. Should I post the hundreds of other information on Columbus’s horrible actions for you to discredit, or should people just decide for themselves?HoustonWave wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2020 2:06 pmNot as weak as those two clown authors cited in your links above--one a privileged private prepster and Ivy Leaguer who probably has never been outside of New England, and who has already been duped at least once by a bogus scientific study, and the other the self proclaimed "Angriest Black Man in America"--yea, I'd believe what they writembawavefan12 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2020 9:39 amIdk, that article is pretty weak. You get on that soapbox and defend Columbus as a hero who deserves statues dedicated to him in public squares. Good stuff. You should be proud, congrats.
Also, after another read, the article you referenced is a freakin joke and there are numerous articles telling a very different story. But that is just fakes news, right?
Oglala Sioux call for removal of Mount Rushmore sculptures. https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/02/us/cheye ... index.html
After all, 2 of the figures were slave owners, another “held great animosity for Native Americans” and Lincoln, the slaves freed themselves? And anyway, the Sioux own Mount Rushmore?

It was sold (probably forcibly) by the owners, the Sioux. The duress they may have been under at the time could be a nullifying factor. I know we have lawyers on board that could address that.Wave755 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 10:16 am, but the sale of stolen property is always subject to "nullification."golfnut69 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 9:14 am this article reports the State of South Dakota, purchased the land that includes Mt Rushmore
