Tulane

2023 record: 11-3
2024 record: 1-0

Why you should: You might see 11 wins and not want to jump on the bandwagon because the program has been too good the past few years. But this is a new staff, led by Jon Sumrall, who took over after an impressive two-year stint at Troy. It’s hard for Group of 5 programs to sustain success during this period of college football, so it would be nice to see Tulane remain competitive after losing its coach, Willie Fritz, to a Big 12 school (Houston). The Green Wave have a big opportunity this weekend when nationally ranked Kansas State comes to town.

Why you shouldn’t: After this home date with Kansas State, Tulane visits Oklahoma next week. That will take a physical toll on the Green Wave, and it doesn’t get much easier with a road game at Louisiana right before AAC play starts against USF. So the depth of the team will be challenged, and Sumrall is still in the early stages of his roster build.

Bottom line: Sumrall is a quality coach who might be bound for a job at an SEC school at some point. He should be able to continue Tulane’s run of success, which included a Cotton Bowl win in 2022. How high can he take the Green Wave, and how soon?

But right now, it's Mensah's job. If he plays well, Horton and Thompson's roles will not change. Mensah is our starting QB unless his play dictates otherwise. Horton is #2, and Thompson has his packages. Of course it's subject to change as it is at every program. This is Mensah's job, and unless he folds under pressure or gets hurt, the other two are fading to the back and take few, if any snaps with the first team in practice going forward.

Opinions are not facts, time will tell!!!

Big watch out this week, Sumrall did not want to tip his hand, but watch the defense put in different blitzes and rush packages, the defense was vanilla last week against a weak opponent. We will see most of Sumrall's defensive packages although I believe he is smart enough to hide a thing or two for Oklahoma!!! As far as offense I believe we will see more jet sweeps, and crossing patterns to confuse the Kansas St. secondary, play action passes and screens will also be used to keep the rush at bay!!!

Tulane and Kansas State present one of the more interesting matchups of Week 2, pitting talented run games against each other Saturday.

Tulane hopes for a repeat of the 2022 result as the series moves from the Little Apple to the Big Easy:

Very interesting his comments about how Sumrall gets them emotionally ready to play--especially around the 7:52 mark where he is comparing it to last year and he says, "it isn't like a funeral"--no wonder so many of Willie's teams came out like sleepwalking zombies.

The problem is that if there is lightening, they have to get off the field for 30 minutes . If it keeps happening they eventually have to call off practice because the players have class. So CJS decided making sure they got the full practice in was more important.

Second part of this, Kstate youtuber doesnt think much about our offense against their D, their front seven. Apparently their Offense is suspect so emphasizing on how their D will dominate. He said they will win big, lets see…..

Their QB is basically a Punt returner/WR until he proves otherwise, but typically when we have faced this in the past in the AAC it caused us big problems!! Many past examples of this.

Watching some of their FCS game he can make the wide open throw against the zone.

If you play man to man against him he probably cant make the throw reliably and they are not that fast at the skill positions to get open, so he will run it with everyone’s back turned, so once he gets past line of scrimmage its a punt return and he is a quick cut back runner he is long gone once he gets to the field side.

It looked to be a very basic offense.

I think he's comparable to John Rhys Plumlee as far as speed goes. Need to spy him all the time.

Their D locked up UT-M last week. I will give them credit there. Held them to 147 yards and 4 sacks. It may be a very tough front 7. We will see what we are made of Saturday from a talent and a coaching stand point.

As for their Offense and QB, I am assuming they did not show much last week. They claim the reason their starter last year left to be the starter at Ohio St (so yes he was good) is because he was going to lose his job to this QB. That is probably a stretch, but this kid can move. He threw a int last week that was ugly. Very underthrown ball over the middle. that may have been picked off by a LB. He will be better this week though and we may have to play them like we did Martinez 2 years ago. I thought we gave way too much cushion to SLU's WRs so will be interesting to see our approach this week. I hope we do not let the QB get in a rhythm with easy throws that we give up because we are playing soft. That could really put us in a bind.

Looking at the radar and forecasting what’s coming our way, it sounds sensible to delay the start time 3-4 hours. There’s going to be some serious street flooding in NOLa Friday night through Saturday morning.
