2024 Baseball Season

2005 was a true setback and for many schools would have been a death knoll. As much as I wailed on Cowdick, they did “get us through “. We’ve had some success in baseball since but not like those previous seasons. Hope and believe that we can get there but so much has changed in college baseball. Will we evolve to that level of pre Katrina?

Others know more about college baseball and Tulane baseball than me, but from what I understand, we're not as relevant for the following reasons:
- The scholarship limits and losing TOPPS scholarships have made it much more difficult to get kids into the program as Tulane is one of the most expensive private universities.
-About the time this was happening, more schools started funnelling money into baseball. So we went from being one of a small group truly competing to one of a big group, many with more resources
-Troy Dannen really didn't care too much about baseball and the Athletics Department placed less emphasis on the sport.
-The hiring of Jewett and then Uhlman have been absolute disasters. The program went through it's worst season ever last season, and salvaging a Conference Tournament Title put lipstick on the pig.

All accurate points. TOPS program made us less competitive in state and elimination of legislative scholarships did too as we would get several of those from friendly legislators and while I don’t know anything about current practice, Jones was great at finding guys who would come if offered partial scholarships so he would split these into quarters and use them. But as noted, baseball wasn’t a big time sport in the 1980-2005 era so only LSU and Miss State were real competition from SEC. The increased popularity of college baseball has made it much more difficult for a private school like Tulane to compete unless a major NIL effort was made.

This is ridiculous you don't recruit athletes for physical statue you recruit for results. Sandy Koufax was a great picture but small in size. Hank Aaron was small in stature but his quick wrist action coming around to hit the ball solidly made him one of the all-time best Home Run hitters. Obvious this coaching staff has no clue. Compare to analysis by LSU's Coach Johnson praising former pitcher Jake Brown for his quick bat giving him time to make decisions at the last moment when swinging. (Similar to Hank Aaron) "He's got great hand-eye, and he's got great bat speed because he's so explosive, such an explosive athlete," Johnson said Friday. "And when you have that combo, you make good early decisions because you're picking up the ball and you can afford to make late decisions. So, this former 6'2" pitcher will play outfield for LSU. Our staff does not have the ability to analyze player details to that extent.

I think U meant Koufax was a great "pitcher"..fyi Koufax attended the University of Cincinnatti on a partial basketball ride and was a walk on to the baseball team...he heard the baseball team was going to travel to NOLA, so he told them he was a pitcher

The Pros and Cons of Being Taller or Shorter as a Pitcher
Taller pitchers give the impression of throwing faster because they can take longer strides and get the ball to the batter more quickly. Also, batters have a harder time dealing with taller pitchers since they tend to throw the ball higher.

Shorter pitchers also have their advantages. Since their center of gravity is lower, they are easier to steer precisely. Batters often have trouble timing a short, quick-arm pitcher.

Yet taller pitchers run the danger of injury and have difficulty maintaining a regular delivery due to the length of their arm action. It may be difficult for shorter pitchers to get a downward angle on the ball and keep it moving quickly.

You annoy me when you crap on some of the best people Tulane has ever employed. And when you're proven wrong, Fido comes out and won't let it go. That's why you feel like you're being stalked; you cannot face the fact that you sometimes post things others point out are inaccurate and refuse to admit in the face of evidence that you were wrong. It's ok to be wrong until you draw a line in the sand over it.

All the talk about height, and the Friday and Saturday starters stand 6-0 and 5-11. Should they be called "openers", instead of starters. Two career relievers are now starting. Doesn't make much sense to me, unless this staff has unlocked their starting talent. Any takers on that happening? As long as they "throw the white thing over the white thing at home plate for strikes."

I will be at GFATS on Friday night. Can't wait to see what this coaching staff does with the batting order.

Guidry was 5'11"..as was Fernado Valenzuela, Pedro Martinez, Dave Roberts,...Whitey Ford was 5'10'....Six footers include Bob Feller, Greg Maddux..... Bobby Schantz of the Yankees was 5'6''.......tall pitchers make longer strides to the plate, making the release point closer and making it look like they throw "harder" than a shorter pitcher ...the speed may be the same, the distance is shorter...fyi, from the front of the "pitching rubber" to home plate is 60'6"...it's the last 6 inches that get you in trouble

Just saw a well produced highlight of the 2023 Championship game shown during halftime on ESPN+. Very cool that the players got smaller versions of the AAC Championship trophy.. Maybe they believe in themselves as a result of that great weekend. Who knows? It’s a reason for optimism.
