A 6-foot-9 forward, Bates averaged 33.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.3 steals as a sophomore at Ypsilanti (Mich.) Lincoln en route to becoming the first sophomore to be named Gatorade National Player of the Year. Playing for his dad's team at Ypsi Prep Academy as a junior in 2020-21, he averaged 24.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game.

Bates does not turn 19 until January 2023, meaning he would not be eligible for the 2022 NBA Draft.
