Celebrating their first decade of FCS/FBS football. New conference will do wonders for attracting top flight coachiig staff & prospects.
They have the capacity to rival UCF. USF, Cincinnati & Temple right out of the chutes.
They went 4-8 last year and lost to Liberty by 6 touchdowns. Yes, they beat in-state rival VaTech. I don't think there isn't potential, but I don't think they're going to compete for an AAC Championship in their first years.
Bobby Wilder did a remarkable job starting a program from nothing in 2009 won the CAA
Not taking a thing away from him. In their third season, (2011) their first in the CAA, they won the CAA. They didn't win any kind of championship in 2009. And they never won an FCS championship, though they did make it to the quarterfinals one year.
Do you open your eyes In the morning determined to behave like a peckerwood every day? I said they started the program in 2009 and two years later won the CAA. Never said they won FCS championship?

Read your post, it suggests that they won the CAA in 2009. I may be a peckerwood, but at least I'm literate.

I still think the AAC should push to add Buffalo to replace UCONN. It may not be an exciting choice, but Buffalo is in a nice market in the northeast, strong football and basketball programs, and very strong academically being an AAU member.

No chance UCONN stays for football:

Others are inquiring and doesn't have to be from the northeast.

You have to wonder how many people at UConn are pushing this. We all know how easy it is in today's social media environment to make a small group seem like the overwhelming majority. When Cowen suggested that Tulane go down in football, even he put it out there in public first, which allowed a public response. This UConn thing didn't seem to ever be made public until it was essentially done. The voices of dissent never seemed to get a chance to rebut publicly. This can't be the choice for Huskie fans who support sports other than basketball.

It was a mistake there was ever a sever to start, but that's what chasing football pipe dreams will do to almost any school. For UConn, its appeal and greatest chance for success, making money and reinforcing its brand power (hate the term or not, these things matter to the tune of millions of dollars) has always and will always be basketball.

I have a much different memory of Cowen's attempt to bring Tulane out of FBS football. To my recollection, he was trying to do it behind closed doors until it got leaked to a few Tulane supporters who took it public and created an outrage. Golfnut, please tell us the story again!

This story kind of ignores the position UConn was put into when the Big East expanded to football. There is no doubt that UConn was screwed by the process. At the time, their choice was to put money into football and be able to compete with Miami, BC, Pitt, Va Tech, Syracuse, West Va. Who would not jump at that choice? You would make that money back up easily. Then, when the Big East decided to go back to basketball-only, the other schools got sucked up by P5's and UConn got left in the cold. If the ACC had an empty slot, they would have belonged there, but it never happened. It put them in a lot of debt and gave them no outlet to recover the P5 money they had counted on as Big East football. Even though they got screwed, this decision only makes sense if they eventually want to step down in football class.

🤔, my understanding was Cowen "put it out there in public first" only because he got "scooped" before he could simply have the board vote to end Div. 1 football at Tulane?

For ending both engineering and Newcomb, Cowen would not allow himself to be "scooped" again, and instead in due course each of us "rolled out of bed one morning" only to learn Newcomb and engineering were no more.

I am not suggesting that Cowen was being a good guy by doing this. If he could have destroyed it, he would have. I am only stating that it happened that way and we were allowed to respond. I wonder how many UConn fans agree with this move and how much open discussion there was of it. It's being presented as something most UConn fans wanted.

He did not do it publicly. He was very much doing it in the dark until he got exposed. Golf will tell you how he was playing golf with I believe administrators of UT who showed him a letter from Cowen canceling the game we had scheduled with them because we were dropping football. He then let people in NOLA know who then started posting on the yoggie site. That's how it came to light and how we got our chance to march on campus.

And, the Slattens (BISSO MARINE) also claim they informed Buddy D (Diliberto) at WWL-Radio before Cowen could take a vote of the board. And then, Buddy D made it a crusade with the broadcasting power of WWL-Radio to save Tulane football from Cowen.

Well, technically, the ACC did have a slot open, but, because UConn football was not where it needed to be, that slot went to Louisville. Rumblings are that the meaningful football programs in the ACC (i.e. Clemson, Florida State, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech) wanted to add a program that was good in football, and that that was the driver for Louisville over UConn.

A perfect example of why a conference should choose their members based on more constant metrics than "winning football team". What was Louisville's football record again last year?

Once every five years or more log in but worth it on this topic. It must be remembered that Slatten (Scott?) initially revealed Cowen's nefarious plot on the YOGWF but it was deleted and not allowed by JtS. Read that again. Those around at the time can verify. Mr. Slatten ended up posting on the only other venue available at the time, nola.com, because that was his only way to set off the alarm to the fans and regular folks in a hurry. That's where the media picked it up.

If it were up to JtS and the YOGWF, thankfully it wasn't, the then 110 year old Tulane football program would have been Cowenized, and that worthless carpet bagger would have succeeded in destroying not only New Orleans only D1 football program, but the only reason why we have an NFL team to begin with.

It mustn't be forgotten. If it weren't for alternative means, the YOGWF 'delete now because I feel like it, don't bother to verify" mentality, particularly with something as historically important as Cowen's slimy scheme, would have cost Tulane and the city big.

JtS has deleted many posts that were critical of the Tulane Administration, even though they were posted in the best interests of Tulane Athletics. If you were openly critical of Cowen or Dickson, it was only a matter of time before you got banned.

Let's see what happens this year. They've had a good last 20 years. Now go look at the 20 years prior to that. Remember there was a time when Baylor was Top 5 for a couple of years? Didn't UConn go to a BCS bowl? The point is, if you bring in a school based on only "football success", what do you do when they no longer have that success and bring nothing to the table? Remember, Louisville doesn't bring the academics to the ACC that most of the other schools do as well.

My point is I don't think Louisville athletics are on par with most of the ACC, and are better than a good portion of the P5's. One bad season doesn't change that just as one 7-6 season doesn't change what the fans perceive about Tulane football.

In the early 2000's UConn was trying desperately to get the P6/P5 invite that Louisville received, that was part of the reason they moved football up from FCS to FBS. BC blocked them when they were at their peak, and by the next shuffle they weren't as good as Edsall had moved on, and Louisville was wrapping up a 12-1 season. Interesting to note that, much like Petrino returning to Louisville, Edsall hasn't had the same success at UConn in his second stint. And Louisville is no worse academically than the current bell-cow for the ACC, Clemson.

UConn did some very good things in a short period of time (and have shown results and rankings this century that we pray for as Tulane fans.) The decision to leave the AAC is one that is really going to hurt, if not kill UConn football. And yes, it is "Cowen-ish".

The issue with UConn is that it was never going to be consistently relevant in football even if it joined any of the 5 existing power conferences. It’s true the UConn won the Big East with 5 losses and was therefore entitled to the Big East’s auto selection bid, the Big East was dying and losing gridiron relevance ever since Miami and Virginia Tech left for the ACC in 2004.

Further, both the ACC and Big 12 are high end basketball conferences - consistently the two best. Because that is the case, neither conference needed to add another team primarily for basketball, and, given that UConn football has a low ceiling, there is no real reason to consider them other programs that also offer higher football ceilings (i.e. Cincinnati).

UConn to the Big East was the best option for that program even if means the eventual death of UConn’s FBS football team.

A lot of UConn fans seem to think them moving to the BE will increase the BE payout from $4m per school to close to $6m. On top of that, they think having their own deal with SNY and playing an indy schedule full of P5s is going to somehow bring them in multi millions more per year, Best of luck to them on that.

That's just dumb. UConn football will be New Mexico State/UMass.
