California lawmakers voted to let NCAA athletes get paid.

Discuss anything else athletic or non-athletic related that doesn't belong on the main Tulane athletics forum.

Here's a half-hour video chat between Troy Dannen and Gabe Feldman, Director of Tulane Sports Law, discussing college athlete compensation. Both participants are in favor of compensating college athletes.

The NCAA has been an unwilling participant since 1984. It is a beautiful thing!

What’s the point of having the NCAA any longer? They have zero control over anything. The conferences should put a coup de grace in their head.
Tulane is the University of Louisiana

They have been deposed where it counts. The NCAA still rules over the non-rev programs. I'd say they're in a pinch?

Things moving fast. Congressman proposing a bill to tax athletic scholarships as income.
If this passes its going to end up hurting most student athletes.

There's a better way to do this. Do like the Ivy league and do away with athletic scholarships completely. If you can't get in because of your grades, you don't go. Not everyone is cut out for a college education, and a large number of these kids don't care about the education anyway.

That's a bit harsh, IMHO.

I think if we can help kids that had little chance at a decent education, even if they major in Phys Ed and then go out and become Phys Ed teachers (and coaches), we've helped somebody that can affect change on unknown numbers of the next generation. Make them take the core courses, give then a well rounded education, and send them out into the community. This will ultimately help Tulane grow a fan base and have serious inroads in recruiting. It's a long term view, not short sighted. There was a time when Tulane University College had most of the athletes. There's nothing wrong with that. Just do the right thing academically, give them tools to succeed at whatever profession they're attracted to (and lets face it, 99% of these kids will never see a dollar from the NFL, MLB, or NBA) and help them become productive members of their community.
