The annual rankings drop continues at Tulane, yet tuition and fees increase with no end in sight.

Three things you can be certain of re: another drop in rankings:
1. Cowen will be praised.
2. The Katrina card will be played.
3. The university will dismiss the rankings as unimportant/inaccurate since Tulane is moving in the wrong direction.

Remember when the rankings were going down due to Katrina attrition, and as soon as those classes graduated we were going to shoot back up?Dr. Rosenrosen wrote:Three things you can be certain of re: another drop in rankings:

As a point of fact, the day Cowen started was Tulane's highest ever ranking in the USNWR rankings and the day he left we are at our lowest ever ranking.
It takes a a delusional human being to take a public victory lap with parades after that kind of performance. Truly disgusting.

And because of that tuition will increase....Dr. Rosenrosen wrote:Three things you can be certain of re: another drop in rankings:

This is really sad news. Thanks Cowen. I believe their first rankings came out in 1983 and we were in the 30s. I may be wrong. Does anyone know our highest ranking and what year? How far have we fallen? At one time not long ago U. S. News & World Report defined Tier 1 universities as their Top 50. They expended it recently to approximately a 100. Following the old ranking we would not for the last several years be a Tier 1 university. I hope Fitts can turn it around.

Did you note Tulane is now tied with Ohio State University? I would encourage those interested to look at the 1998 rankings and those today and see how many universities with major athletic programs (namely FBS football but you can include UCSB and UC Davis as well if you wish) have vaulted over Tulane including many state universities.tpstulane wrote:And because of that tuition will increase....Dr. Rosenrosen wrote:Three things you can be certain of re: another drop in rankings:

In other words the so called football factories are running laps around Tulane in the public's relative perception of the quality of their ACADEMIC side and of their overall universities compared to Tulane. Don't think this isn't impacting enrollment. These folks are now beating Tulane headsup for students each is actively recruiting.

Right. Everyone has known this for some time. Cowen's major strategic initiatives were absolute failures. At least his yes-man AD is still here constructing his strategically flawed athletic program.lurker123 wrote:Did you note Tulane is now tied with Ohio State University? Tulane was ranked 34 in 1998 (according to a Google search). I believe this was the highest ranking for TU.
So Cowen inherited a #34 academic ranking and a #7 football ranking only to destroy both in a short time.Dr. Rosenrosen wrote:Tulane was ranked 34 in 1998 (according to a Google search). I believe this was the highest ranking for TU.

Wow. Great article.
Northeastern (not Northwestern) Univ. went from 162 to 42 since 1996. Meanwhile, Tulane goes from 34 to 54 while tuition skyrockets, athletics flounder (to be kind), engineering is gutted and Cowen rolls out community service initiatives no one cares about.

They (TU) also tried to play the game with the free applications, it didn't work. This is why they are building all the dorms. They waited way too long on Bruff. Also have to hire more teachers. Killing engineering and CS is just ridiculous. I know TU has been trying to play the US News game for a few years. What is sad and hilarious is that, just like athletics, SC follows and doesn't lead as schools like Northeastern realized how to play the game years ago and are already ahead of us.
I love that Northeastern limited their class sizes to 19, what a joke. When I was graduating High School in the Boston suburbs in the late 1990's, Northeastern and BU were considered safety schools. In fact, when BC played BU in hocket, BC fans would in fact chant "Safety School. Safety School."

That's the sad case succinctly put. Shame on the Board for supporting this and the media for enabling it. The results are devastating to Tulane as well as the city and the state.Dr. Rosenrosen wrote:Wow. Great article.

You just wonder if/when the market for a $63K/year non-top 50 school (with poor athletics to boot) will plummet. See Loyola-NO.
Hope Fitts can turn it around.

That's the point. Cowen thought he had a better idea for athletics that he and he alone understood. He even penned a letter to the editor in the NYT to enlighten everyone about his brilliant plan and yet it's been a disaster in every conceivable way. That this man took victory laps in the wake of these results suggests some pathological issues and a stunning lack of awareness.mbawavefan12 wrote:Dr. Rosenrosen wrote:Wow. Great article.

But at least he spent the last year contractually securing his loyalists in senior management ensuring that his legacy of failure continues to permeate and infect the university.

Harvard too, now. Computer Science the most popular class, as it has been at Stanford for two years.
I guess it's Katrina's fault that Cowen killed the program. And you wonder why we've fallen off the cliff....

And lest we forget his highness also eliminated civil engineering right after Katrina when New Orleans desperately needed (hello!) civil engineers. You can't make this stuff up!

It really is absurd enough to believe Cowen was a manchurian candidate sent to destroy Tulane from the inside. A manchurian candidate would have killed D1A sports, computer science and the rest of engineering, doubled tuition, alienated alumni and the local community, etc...Dr. Rosenrosen wrote:And lest we forget his highness also eliminated civil engineering right after Katrina when New Orleans desperately needed (hello!) civil engineers.
