Yea, we really shut down Blake Bortles today.

Get real; this UCF team a faint shadow of last season's Fiesta Bowl winner.
Can you for once take off the RD blinders. We went in a big underdog on the road against a team that has won many straight conference games. We played much better than anyone expected.
Pete is correct. While TU played better, UCF is nowhere near what it was a year ago.
Absolutely correct, but that still puts them in the 50 range, higher than Penn State, Michigan and Texas, and we had enough talent to win the game.

Not interested in moral victories at all but today clearly showed just how much the program has improved.

You're correct. They aren't a top 5-ish team like they were with Bortles.

But I think you can overstate how bad they are. They lost at Missouri, and they narrowly dropped a game vs Penn State they should have won. Like us, they have QB issues. But they will be in the top 25 by the end of the year, Im betting. They have a decent shot at beating ECU, and if they win out, will be in the Peach bowl. They just beat BYU. They won at Houston.

This is a good team we hung with today. It isn't a top ten team, but it's a quality team on the road and there was a reason we were 20 pt dogs.

I'll say it again, we aren't far from being a very good team. The QB play is crushing the offense right now, and the special teams mistakes are very fixable in the spring. Honestly, when you look at how we played in the trenches today on the road against a top 25ish team, there is a lot we can take out of this game. It's not good enough. But there's reason to believe we are on the right track.

It's only a moral victory if you are satisfied. But you can still take positives out of a loss without it being a moral victory. Things can't be that binary.

The most important thing today is that we competed really well along the lines with an experienced, quality team that used to roll us. We won a lot of matchups on the outside too with skill guys. There's a lot of reasons to believe we are close to turning the corner.

We are as good or better than last season's team. Most thought our record would not be as good though. That's about right so far.

Their D/C was reading E. Price like a paper back novel all day long. Price lacks the imagination and ability to be a good O/C. Our clock management @ the end of the 1st half was awful. Receivers couldn't catch the ball. Pure vanilla offense with an offensive coaching staff to match. TU has the ability to win some games next year, but not with the current O coaching staff, especially the O/C and QB coach. We will be lucky to win 1 more game this year w/Price's offense not having the ability to put points on the board.

Agree

We have to do something about this offense, special teams and all around coaching/preparation though.

Teams just don't respect our passing attack or play calling with Nick in. 9 in the box just about every down. They dare us to throw deep. We had a 3rd and 2 so we drop back 5 yards and dump it off to a RB for a loss. This is insane. We completely play not to lose with Nick at QB.

Typical Price play calling for last two years. Down one and two are predicted runs up the middle for no or little yards.. Down three a pass incomplete. Down four forced to punt giving the opposing team excellent field position. Fire the Prices now!

The math doesn't add up when you run the ball 36 times and pass it 42 times. How does your 2 runs and a pass produce more passing plays than running plays?

Yes, the play calling stinks, but you've posted this same nonsense a few times, Jonathan. Do the math, we're not a run, run, pass team. If that were the case you'd see 52 running plays and 26 pass plays.

This winter: New OC, new QB coach, new 0-line coach & special teams coach. CJ's future as a head coach will not only depend on his ability to bring in coaching talent, but to trust them by throwing the keys at the them.
CJ is uniquely qualified as a head coach for reaching out to Louisiana prospects and promoting the State of Tulane. This message is not only transforming people's perception of the Football program, but of the University as a whole. IMHO, he needs to back off on the day-to-day operations and place his trust on the OC & the DC's to manage the strategy, tactics & execution. Right now there is way, way too much bickering on the sidelines between the staff. CJ needs to cool it and give his coordinators the authority to managed their staffs.

Great post. CJ clearly needs to "give the keys" to an OC that knows game management. Yesterday, the clock management (aided by a scoreboard operator with a quick trigger finger) was horrendous, particularly at the end of the first half. Call the timeout with 57 seconds to go, the next play was run somewhere around the 35 second mark. Then to spike the ball on 4th down???? WTF??? At worst we should have asked for a measurement, it was right on the yellow line (which obviously the coaches don't see.) CJ can definitely recruit, but his game day coaching is nowhere near where it needs to be for Tulane to be successful.

I can agree with that. CJ needs to stop this nice sh_t and fire those guys. They aren't getting it done.

What sucks is, "Ok, Tanner Lee is a project and needs more time, Tanner Lee is hurt and can't play" Sure, that's fine.

But the coaching staff has not been able to do anything to develop Montana or Powell over their time here. They needed to develop these guys into at least a serviceable backup. That is on the coaching.

Why not give Powell a chance @ this point? He probably won't do any worse that Lee or Montana have done. At least, he has the arm to go downfield and he has some mobility. Give him the same vanilla offensive plays that Montana had, with some shots downfield and see what happens. I doubt that he would throw 9 interceptions for the rest of the year. I just don't think that this coaching staff has a clue as to what is going on most of the time. Clock and game management have been a disaster. Play calling very predictable by the opposing D/C. Kicking and long snaps a disaster, with no known plans for immediate correction. The ball is in CJ's court. Either he make some much needed changes or 2015 will be as bad or worse that 2014 has been already.

CJ should be the face of Tulane Football, but he has to "rebuild" his coaching staff by bringing guys who can teach the fundamentals and technical aspects of the game. He should hire a guy to help with game/clock management and give him the title, "Associate Head Coach."

Since his recruiting appears to have become completely locally based to the New Orleans Metro area, the savings on the recruiting budget should be put into salaries for the coaching staff allowing CJ to hire some better qualified, more successful coaches instead of promoting grad students and taking on unemployed losers.

There are a lot of staffs with "Associate Head Coaches". On most staffs they seem to be among the least qualified - I think this comes as the result of a head coach hiring a loyal friend and not necessarily the most qualified candidate for the job. Coordinators are typically the ones who set the tone, assess the talent and generally have the most influence on each side of the ball.
I was always amazed at how completely separated we were as an offensive & defensive unit & how each unit would take on the identity of the coordinators.

Too much emphasis on hiring recruiters is a problem too. Most staffs have one Frank Wilson. I understand the importance of raising our talent level but it seems we put too much emphasis on it in our hiring. This team is desperate for good coaching.

These prices aren't recruiters. How about they do a little coaching.
Seriously, though, those are the guys who should be teaching. Look what Lamb did with our special teams (and look what's happened since he left).

The other thing about our recruiters is that they are all NOLA recruiters. We should need only 1 or 2 of those. Need more in Fla and, in my view, California.

From Day 1 Price was the piece of the coaching puzzle that did not make sense. Nothing has changed after 3 seasons. We have close friends that are Memphis fans and they insisted that Price was one of the main reasons Porter got fired.

CJ needs to make a move.

Many schools have a "quality assessment coach" or similar. Maybe Sean Payton can offer his evaluation.

I'm so glad someone else felt this way about Price. He was terrible at Memphis, and when we hired him, my first reaction was "WTF?" Three years later, it hasn't changed.
