At least there was something good about football in 2012. Mucho congrats.

However, next year, I really hope that Santos leads the NCAA in a different category --- consecutive PAT's made.

Some credit has to go to the coaching staff. They made special teams a priority and it showed.

National media stories
http://www.nola.com/tulane/index.ssf/20 ... er_default
Current NFL kickers Sebastian Janikowski, Mike Nugent, Kai Forbath and Dan Bailey are all past winners of the award, and this honor gives Santos an excellent chance to take the next step in his career.

While being a professional kicker is certainly not a stable job, NFL teams always have room for a reliable player with a big leg, and Santos has proven this season that he has both of those qualities.

People were a little surprised that we "spent" scholarships on a deep snapper last year, and an incoming deep snapper in '13. It seemed odd given the huge number of needs we have.

But credit where its due. When you're talking about making 40+ FGs consistently (and making 50+ FGs at all), a kicker's leg strength is important, but the consistency, quality, and speed of the ball from snap to hold is vital. To get back to respectability, we need to be fighting for every point.

The marginal impact of these guys is actually pretty big if you look at it from a 'sabermetrics' standpoint. They rarely get hurt, and their impact on points per snap played is massive. Failed long snaps don't only blow potential points for your team, but they lead to blocked kicks which can mean 7 points the other way and huge swings in momentum. Investing a scholarship in a long snapper is something that we hadn't done in the past, but something that makes a lot of sense when you think about it, and something that demonstrates the football brains and pro-pedigree of this staff.

Agree w/your assessment except that we have given scholarships to LS's and therefore had 2 this year the other being John Edwards.

On my way to work today the local sports radio station 1010am talked to Cairo via phone and I'll have to say what a humble guy.He was surprised yet thankful to win the award and he talked about coming to America as an exchanged student and being asked to try out as a kicker for high school because of his soccer background. Dan Hicken, the local radio/tv sports guy asked him what was his longest fg and of course ciro said the 57 yarder vs Rice and he told them about how he told his father the college award show was the"oscars" of college sports.Dan Hicken thought Cairo's story was great.Glad I had that station tuned into my radio today.

AP All-American http://collegefootball.ap.org/article/2 ... -team-list

By the way the only future Big East football program to have an AP All-American First Teamer? Tulane.
