Here is his competition for the Groza Award:
BC kicker is 12-12 from 20-50 yds out (missed his only attempt over 50)
K. ST kicker is 14-16 with a 2 misses inside 40 yds.
Louisville K is 10-11 with the miss coming over 50 yds.
OK kicker is 10-11 with a miss from over 40 yds.
VT kicker is 12-14 with a miss under 40 yds and one from 47.
San Jose St. K is 13-13 with 8 attempts <30 yds out. 0 attempts over 50 yds.
Northwestern K is 12-13 with a miss over 50 yds.
Ball St. K is 20-24 and is 8-10 over 40 yds.
Add
Clemson K is 12-13 with a miss from over 40 yds. (but only 4 made over 30 yds)

Santos' 14-14 includes 9 successful attempts from over 40 yds out with 2 of those being over 50 yds. out.
His percentage of kicks into the endzone on kickoffs is also apparently one of the highest in the nation.

If the season ended to day, I believe Santos would be the odds on favorite.

edit: The stats I looked at earlier didn't include today's games. So, I think we can remove the K. State kicker and the VT kicker as they both missed their second attempts today. Also, take out Louisville. Less than 10% of his KO result in a touchback. I would have to say the closest competition is from the Northwestern kicker. He is the current Northwestern school record holder for most consecutive made extra points in a season (50, 2011) and career (80, 2010-present) ... 80-for-80 in his career on PAT's. He has already been named Groza award star of the week, twice this year.

Also, I looked up KO returns and touchbacks.
Santos' kickoffs result in touchbacks 64% of the time. (27 of 42)
The NU kicker has just 20% of his kicks result in a touchback. (11 of 55)

btw, ECU ranks nearly the worst in yds allowed following a kickoff (116 of 120). So, I hope we put Rounds or a burner to return kicks next week. Tulane currently ranks 100/120 in KO returns.

But yeh, the kid is a great kicker. The 57 yarder was thing of beauty. And definitely an emotional lift. He's 14 of 14 now. Just wish he was 13 of 13.
Or 15 of 15, if we could have got that onside recovered and hit a game winner.
And judging by dpm's post I'd say Cairo has a really good shot at winning the Lou Groza.

The Alabama kicker hasn't missed anything this year. I don't know his stats for each distance FG, but because he is from the BCS frontrunner, he more than likely is a candidate.

Oh man. Don't remind me. I thought we were going to get that one. It was a perfect onside kick. We had a real chance at it.

The Alabama kicker is 9-9 with no attempts over 40 yds. They bring in their long PK who does kickoffs for anything over 40 (and is just 4-8 in his attempts over 40 yds). Plus the long PK is right at 50% of his kickoffs are touchbacks. So, I would have to say if the Bammer kicker makes the initial cut of 20 it would be inconsistent with what the Groza Award website says is their criteria to make it.

Side note: former Tulane committ, Cody Mandell-JR, is Bammer's punter. He is currently ranked 40th in the nation with a 42.45 yd. avg (38.27 yd. net). Our true Freshman, Picerelli, is not far behind. He's now 51st with a 41 yd avg (37.33 yd. net).

Tomorrow, the 20 semi-finalists will be announced. Later they trim it down to 3 finalists.
IMAO, the top 3 right now are:

1) Santos (14-14 including 9-9 over 40 yds and 64% of KO are touchbacks). Avg. distance of made FG is 41 yds.
2) Northwestern's PK (see above for details) Avg. distance of made FG is 32.67 yds.
3) Duke (16-17 FG/34-34 EXP, but just 33% of KO are touchbacks). Avg. distance of made FG is 31 yds.

The ONLY PK with a longer AVG. distance of FG made is WV, who is at 41.75 yds (but he is 4-10, and 2-7 over 40 yds.)

Be sure and vote for Cairo, even though it won't affect the actual vote. He is killing it in the polls.

That would be a great look if he won. I won't be surprised if our punter turns out to be one of the best in the nation in a couple years.

If he keeps up this pace it would be a travesty not to win. Rigging at its finest.

Seems the Groza people have a hard on for the FSU kicker. Last game they were tweeting his every kick. Seems they may hand it to him because he's now the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history. They finally tweeted about Cairo after I tweeted a comment to them about his 3-3 day. However, the year he's having doesn't hold a candle to Cairo. And what are they thinking with the UF kicker?? Boswell from Rice, Budzien from Northwestern and Duke's K all have had better years. That selection is just plain weird.

If it is a year to year award, Santos is an absolute "shoe-in". If they want to give it to the FSU kid based on his overall career then c'est la vie.

Voted!

Cairo Santos is only one game away from field goal perfection. Only one other player with 20 or more field goals has done that in the NCAA.

Good Luck Cairo and ROLL WAVE!
