This was written before the Jets game. Kelly didn't play much there. Perhaps we'll see more of him this week?

Regardless if the bromance ends and the Skins cut him, someone will pick him up for the practice squad after looking at the Falcons game film alone.

I'm not here to kick the dead but it's not like Kelly in talent or performance had an epiphany when the Skins signed him as an undrafted FA. This is only the latest chapter in woulda coulda shoulda from the previous TU staff.

Kelley got to play with the first team in the second quarter of preseason game 2. He obviously has impressed, as he's jumped past their (5th round?) draft pick on the depth chart. I thought there was no way he's making the team and I was wrong.

There's something like a $300k difference in compensation between a practice squad and an NFL minimum contract. I hope for his sake he makes the team!

If Kelly succeeds this shows you how hard his climb is. Even if the 5th round choice is relegated to practice squad his first year salary was probably guaranteed.

If so, Gruden (and his bosses) will have to be convinced that the true additional expense for Kelly is worth it now versus say "persuading" him to stay on the practice squad for a year when as noted above cost is so much less. Good luck to him. He deserves it.

I would very seriously doubt that the draft pick (Keith Marshall, and it was 7th round) has any money guaranteed, other than the 5 figure signing bonus. Guaranteed contracts in the NFL are VERY few and far between. The NFL teams often cut players that are do off-season roster bonuses and make a lot of their final cuts in favor of lower salaried players to give wiggle room under the cap. The NFL is a 180 degrees different from MLB, where most contracts are guaranteed.

I was just listening to sports radio in the car, and the hosts asked Kirk Cousins how the RBs were doing in practice. Kirk didn't mention any names but mentioned that the biggest things that will separate the RBs (and the toughest thing that they have to do) is learn all of their roles, assignments, protections, and checks. He said being an NFL RB is not what the public often thinks, it isn't about who has the best physical tools and can run over and by people -- it is about knowing the steps you have to go through on every play and to execute them, particularly when they change frequently in the huddle itself. The way he answered it makes me think that some of the young skins running backs (they're all young) may be having trouble with this.

I don't think Kelley will pass Jones obviously, but I think he has a shot at making the 53-man as the third RB. Particularly if he stays focused on executing all the little things that NFL teams expect from their RBs.

I don't vouch for the website but the link says Marshall's salary is guaranteed. Another reason to keep him is if they cut him, the bonus money is no longer prorated over the life of the contract and is immediately applied in total against the current cap.

Take it as you will.

ON EDIT: OOPS I guess I need to read the very very fine print more closely it distinguishes between "guaranteed" and "fully guaranteed." I was certainly inferring the latter even if we use former terminology. Retaining Kelly and cutting Marshall would cost bonus money (and perhaps some of salary since we are nearing the season?) but apparently not a whole lot. Regardless I'm rooting for our man "Fat Rob!!"

He's now ahead of Keith Marshall on the depth chart and pecking order! Here's my source:

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/113 ... h-marshall

Click on "view contract details" just above the FB and tweet buttons at the top of his profile. I would be shocked if anything other than his bonus was guaranteed. If his (Marshall's) year one salary is guaranteed, the GM should be fired. He's a 7th round pick! 7th rounders get cut frequently.

Ryan Grant has been playing well and carries a low salary cap number ($600k) this year, so hopefully he's pretty safe and will play more.

Posted by MN on the other site:

From Washington Post article on last night's game:

"4. Robert Kelley delivers again. The undrafted rookie running back appeared to take another step toward his quest to make the roster and distance himself from Keith Marshall. The Tulane product rushed for 51 yards on 12 carries, averaging 4.3 yards per attempt. But most importantly, Kelley had three really good blitz pickups to buy Cousins time to complete passes. “I knew I had to protect the money man,” Kelley said. “I want him to know I’ve got him and have confidence in me.” Cousins commended Kelley after the game and said he sees the rookie’s confidence growing. Kelley’s play will likely go a long way toward earning the confidence of his coaches as well. His would-be rival for the final running back spot, Marshall, got hurt after one carry, continuing a disappointing preseason. Mack Brown did some good things (11 carries for 43 yards with a long of 15), but Kelley continued to stand out among this young group and appears deserving of making the roster."

Keep it up Robert! Roll Wave!!

Fat Rob never started for Tulane because C J was an idiot..... Last year this time if we were playing Southern Univ, I would have been worried we would lose this game. THIS YEAR I AM CONFIDENT WE WILL WIN on 09-10-2016. Roll Wave!

Him not getting on the field at Tulane probably had something to do with that. I'd like to see him vs CJ's Bears.

As much as I'm rooting for Rob Kelley to have a successful NFL career, I still chuckle at his arrest for "bicyle jacking". Remember he took a bicycle from another student physically stealing the bike. The victim was also beat up, but apparently not by Kelley. Charges were dropped, and he was reinstated to the team. But it was a silly story and at the very least, some fellow students Kelley was associated with were acting like thugs.

Yes charges were dropped once it was determined it was not Kelley.

Kelley and his legal team told authorities they believed the student who accused Kelley was beaten up by other students and that Kelley was not involved in the theft of his bicycle. Kelley’s attorney Scott Bickford said in a press release that the evidence was in Kelley’s favor.

From Scott Alexander...

I’m hosting WWL Radio night show this week. Can you please help me spread the word that I have former Tulane RB Rob Kelley on with me tonight at 10:30? 870 AM
Rob is hosting a youth football camp this weekend at Yulman Stadium (Saturday) from 9 to 1 with Tanzel, Xavier & Jordan.
