Breaking News: A van in Barcelona just crashed into a crowd of people
Not much details yet.

Sounds like a potential terrorist deal.
Twenty injured at least one dead. Gunman holding hostages in a restaurant nearby.
Some of the team are on a water venture today and some are caught up in the area in question but are in a protected situation.

Yes. I got word that a few of our guys were on lockdown inside some store for their protection.
My wife's daughter is in Paris now and was traveling to Barcelona tomorrow. Now that's been put off.

Be a Hero Today.... Adopt a Shelter Pet... The Beatles once sang "Can't Buy Me Love"... I disagree, unconditional Love can be bought, for the nominal adoption fee at your local Pet Shelter !

Glad to hear the team is safe. Its too bad that the terror attack is what most of everyone will remember from this trip.

Too bad we don't use that international basketball. Seems like the team shot pretty damned well with it in Spain!

I'm glad everyone is safe and (presumably) home for the start of classes.

Actually might be a bigger ball. 29.5 inches in circumference are used in college and NBA vs a minimum of 29.4 inches and maximum of 30.7 inches for international.

The opposition looks like a bunch old men you'd likely see at the YMCA gym.
I thought most of these European teams had a certain number of quality US players. Not all of them are D1 quality, but the few US players would be leaders on their teams here. Guys like Paul Thompson, whom never really had a shot at the NBA but were very good D1 players end up playing abroad. But most of these teams limit the "ringers" from the US to 3 or 4 players.

There are stories of some pretty damned good "name" programs going to Europe for 4 games and not coming home with a win. It's a crapshoot, for sure. Those good programs need not take the extra practices and games seriously. We must.

Well except we're playing dog sh*t teams. The pictures posted from the games look like something you might see at Reily.

After some digging I found that the first team we played against, Club Baloncesto Alcobendas , is in the Spanish 4th division (amateur). And we beat them by 1 point..

I can't find any team that goes by Madrid Select. I would guess it's probably Real Madrid's B team, who also plays in 4th division. Or just as likely given the ragtag uniforms they had, literally a pickup team put together by one of the tour's organizers.

I'm taking these games with a heavy grain of salt.
Yes I know winning anything against anybody disrupts the eternal pity party which some around here prefer. Just curious: do you also think as was expressed here earlier that barnstorming overseas is a cake walk and, to use the stale language of politics, is in effect "a prepaid vacation for free loaders?" Man look at all that sightseeing memorialized in the "official" trip blogs.

Since you're coming to port here on your barge of salt, are you getting season tickets so you have the chance to feel miserable say 18 times or so this season in person? As you imply, these are exhibition wins against cans of corn so not much to worry about for the upcoming season other then do I take the under on Tulane winning six games again? Man UNO is tough and WSU is now in AAC, I just don't know. Man I bet ESPN even kicks us off ESPN3, conference contract be damned.......
Just a little perspective as some have been thumping their chests online that mighty Tulane has gone to Europe and won where other, much bigger basketball programs have gone to Europe and lost every game. The difference being those teams went and actually played First Division clubs not 4th Division amateurs/semi-pros. It matters who you play against, otherwise Conroy's teams would've been tourny bound every year.

I would love to know your source.

It's been reported elsewhere that the Barcelona team that Tulane beat 79-71 lost in the closing seconds to Clemson the same week. Same team. I'd still take these games with a grain of salt, but I don't think they were playing tier 4 teams vs. other US collegiate teams playing tier 1 teams. Dunleavy is not dumb. He's forgotten more about the game than probably anyone that posts here has ever known.

Whether or not he can become a good collegiate coach remains to be seen. Clearly he was learning the college game on the job last year.
