There is no doubt about it. Could be a great hire.
Is this a joke? Pastner couldn't even maintain a program that had already been built. Now you expect him to build a program from scratch?

Johnny Dawkins is available. Just fired by Stanford. Underachieved while there but still has a NCAA Sweet 16 and NIT Championship on his resume.

I think not.
Dawkins made 1 NCAA tourney in 8 seasons. Prior to him: 14/15

Greenbergs resume isn't a whole hell of a lot better if we're honest. Tds short list will be interestin .

Yeah I can see where you coming from, although he really Greenberg hasn't coached anything close to a school that puts resources into basketball

I don't know if I would call him a joke. Pastner has record of 167-73 and has won more than 23 games in 5 of 7 seasons at Memphis. This was his first losing conference record even though they are in year 3 of being in the American. If Memphis canned him, I would give him a look.

There's an article that even mentions the return of Perry Clark.
If someone mentions Perry Clark my head is going to explode, and similarly the Ben Jacobsen mentions are headache-worthy. Just as every time the football coaching job opens up people start inquiring about Tommy Bowden, these suggestions are somewhere between unreasonable and unimaginative.

Dannen knows how to pick coaches. That's how he hired Jacobsen in the first place. Dannen did not get lucky with Jacobsen, requiring him to try to re-hire Jacobsen at every job.

Dannen will either go the more experienced route (Seth Greenberg) or find the next Ben Jacobsen, not the current Ben Jacobsen.
Except Dannen didn't hire Ben Jacobsen. He was there before TD got to Northern Iowa, and has a long term contract Dannen signed him too with an expensive buy-out. So, you are right, he didn't get lucky with Jacobsen!
Fair enough. But doesn't really change my broader point. The recycling of the same names, some now going on 20 years old, is tiresome.

Exactly. Plus the majority of those tournament appearances came under Mike Montgomery's watch. It took him 9 years to get that program going to eventually becoming an NCAA mainstay. Stanford is a tough place to recruit. They're not getting those one and dones like Arizona, Cal, Duke and UK are.

Greenberg's interest doesn't surprise me, he wants to get back in coaching. Wants to go to a decent league, good city, ESPN exposure, but no Power 5 will hire him after he didn't produce at Virginia Tech. Does he have the energy level and drive to rebuild the Tulane program? TD is going to invest much more in MBB than what was done in the past, BUT it is still going to need a lot of work to get the program back to an consistent NCAAT competitive program. I think a younger ball of energy type guy is the move.

I don't think that Tulane will lure the elite mid-major coach. Coaches like Underwood, Drew, or Beard are going to wait for the cream of the crop jobs. Their situations pay them $500,000 or more and their current job setup is going to help them continue to rack up wins, bolster resume, etc. Underwood knows that if he keeps winning he will get a K-State payday of 2 million per year soon. Drew is going to be #1 guy at the next open B10 job. Beard has to be a main target of TCU and Oklahoma State. If you ask me I see it being a Roman Banks or Jason Hooten type hire from TD.

We need higher profile. Banks and Hooten are really low major coaches.....they would get Sunbelt and C-USA offers.
I'll give Banks his due for resurrecting Southern. But Hooten hasn't done anything with Sam Houston. He just took over for ULL's coach Marlin who also had good records at Sam Houston. HOoten hasnt made them any better and Marlin hasn't exactly been scintillating at ULL.

Butch pierre was name dropped today. Random? I don't know. He seems to have some respect in the business. Not a young guy, though. But neither is willie fritz. Butch was a high school teammate with hot rod at St. Amant.

Hiring a successful basketball coach is apparently REALLY tough. When you look at how many programs have been trying hard for quite a while with money and resources and still can't get it done (like LSU), it's obvious that it's a hit and miss thing where you just have to get lucky. There seem to be about 10 elite coaches, 20 more excellent coaches and a muddle of about 50 more adequate ones. Finding the 5 up-and-coming ones that will eventually enter that top 30 (or even that top 80) is not obvious. Hopefully we are due for a hit.

Had Mike White still been at La Tech he would have jumped at this opportunity.
It's going to be interesting as to what direction TD will go. Young and upcoming or a retread.

I just hope we hire a really good coach. I don't care where they come from, but the coach needs to be someone who gets it. Greenberg's resume is interesting. He's taken over three programs that hadn't had a ton of basketball success over the years, but he's only been to 3 NCAA tournaments in over 20 years and two of them came in the 90s with Long Beach State. VT in the ACC is a very difficult job and he managed to produce winning records, but he's getting to that Bob Toledo territory in life. Is he just looking for one final swan song? I'd really like to see what's out there before coming back to a guy like this.

I'd be interested to see if we could pull someone like Russell Turner from UC-Irvine (he's been a West Coast guy and his wife is the head of the ICU at the Irvine Hospital, so he'd be a tough pull), Jerod Haase at UAB or Rob Murphy at Eastern Michigan.

Butch Pierre? Good lord people. The LSU sycophants in the media throw that name around every time we have an opening.
Kermit Davis? Yikes

Besides, both are notorious bagmen.

Ya. I was just commenting on pierre and make the connection. You have to wonder how a star can rise and fall so quickly. I guess its the same guy pimping Frank Wilson.

Look at those a$$hats in baton Rouge. They're running a clown show basketball program with virtually unlimited resources. Tulane basketball is the sleeping giant of sleeping giants. If Tulane wants to be Villanova, Tulane could. But lsu can't be UNC. And that's devlin notwithstanding . It would only take some money.

Butch has tried to get the Tulane job every opening (3 times now going on 4) since Perry Clark left.

MTU has bagmen (or better said, more bagmen than the normal school)? Interesting news.

Last five years: 122-47 overall and 68-20 league. Throwing a name out there, guy who has had success with southern roots, relax.

The perfect Coach for the Greenies would have been Billy Kennedy---Think the same at UL--but he would have been tough in NO being an old Holy Cross kid!!!

Rick Stansbury is intriguing to me. Did a really good job at Miss St which can't be a great place to recruit to. Seemed like a pretty good X and O guy.
Downside is I think an African American coach is almost necessary these days to recruit the AAU circuit.

Bryce Drew would be a splash hire! I hope he's on Dannen's list.
