Congrats to the team on a good effort and a very solid win ... CJ, I got your text regarding my previous post and you printing them for "inspirational purposes".. I have zero problem with continuing to keep up the practice

I cannot get the links to copy...but some interesting articles and comments about the game on the Houston Chronicle newspaper web site

And if I remember correctly, back in the summer before the season started, this is how most of us felt.3. FINAL THOUGHTS
Tulane’s record is going to be worse than last season, but its team may be better. There are still holes in certain areas, but it’s impossible to ignore the young talent on both sides of the ball. True freshmen are everywhere, and mistakes are going to come with the territory, but if the Wave can respond the way it did Saturday evening, the program isn’t as far away from contending as it looked a week ago.

We are building a team with young talent that will win this league. The freshman we played yesterday scored all of our 31pts.

Correct tps but had the team played like this all season long (with the typical freshman mistakes) most people wouldn't be upset with the season. I was very encouraged by yesterday. While the game was not perfect you could finally see what we could become. Seems like the whole team coaching and players came together finally (for the most part).tpstulane wrote:+1RobertM320 wrote:http://www.theneworleansadvocate.com/sports/tulane/

I agree but freshmen are going to make mistakes for awhile even sophomores, juniors and seniors (Donnelly) make them freshman just make more because we play more of them.Dupergreenie wrote:Correct tps but had the team played like this all season long (with the typical freshman mistakes) most people wouldn't be upset with the season. So glad we attended yesterday's game and experienced CJ's first win outside of Louisiana! Great weather, opposing fans, and a tiny group of great diehard Tulane fans in attendance (I would estimate around 75 who were not player parents in the official tailgate and two small visitor sections). While the UH stadium was functional, I agree with Pete on the looks of the stadium, the abundance of unfinished concrete gave it a sort of cheap HS stadium sort of feel. Great effort all around on both sides of the ball. Amazing that this was the same team that came out so flat against Cincy the week before.

This was the first time this year that TU actually LOOKED like a real football team to me this year. Even the win over UConn was not as impressive as the win over Houston (a good team with a record to match).
There were mistakes to overcome (like the fumble for a U/H TD, plus other situations), but Tulane found a way to win anyway. Kudos to everyone involved!
If Tulane exhibits the same effort and intensity over these last three games, then I will defend giving CJ one more year to put it all together for the future. I honestly feel good for the first time about the future of this program in the 'The American' Conference.

Lots of encouraging signs in this game. It was also a huge win to keep the team together. I never saw this W coming, lots of players stepped up! I also felt like Price called a much better game. Normally I can predict pass/run based on the formation but not this game, especially in the red zone. That game might have saved his job, not sure if that is a good thing.

Just finished watching the game, and I have to say, this was the most complete game the Wave has played in a long time. The D was awesome in the second half, and even though they gave up the TD late, and UH was threatening, they did a much better job managing the clock, not giving up the big play and keeping the UH players for the most part from getting OB. The O was very good as well, running the ball and limiting the time UH had when they gave them the ball after the field goal (and also forcing Houston to use all their timeouts. And let's face it, with the exception of a couple of third and long draw plays, everyone in the stadium knew we were running the ball late in the game, and the line was still able to open big holes for Hilliard against a pretty good Cougars D.
This is how I would have liked to seen us play all year. With the exception of a few dumb penalties (T. Smart with his second Personal Foul in the waning moments set up UH inside the 10) and a couple of int's, we really didn't shoot ourselves in the foot much. Yeah, we didn't get the onsides kick, but we had one of the players we wanted field the ball with Doss. He just didn't execute. Play like this the rest of the year, and I will retract a whole lot of (well earned) prior criticism.
We must not regress from here.
All in all, its mixed feelings I have after watching the game. Yeah, the Wave showed what we can be, but I'm also left wondering what could have been had the team put together this kind of effort vs GaTech, Duke, Rutgers and especially Tulsa and Cinci. I would say the game they played today would have turned L's into W's at Tulsa and UCF with the others being a toss up. We should be no worse than 5-4 at this point, possibly 6-3.
This game shows that the sky isn't falling, and hopefully portends to great things to come.
And Robert is right. I knew in the pre-season the team could go 4-8 or 8-4. Four days ago I would have signed off on 4-8.

This Memphis showing is why I only said "today". TPS, I know you love the kid, but he isn't ready to lead a FBS program just yet. He needs some serious polishing.tpstulane wrote:Wave QB wrote:He played a good game today.tpstulane wrote:Tanner Lee baby! LolWave QB wrote:It sure feels good to win! What I fear is that we will never have consistency needed to run this offense week in and week out.Wave QB wrote:This Memphis showing is why I only said "today". We'd probably have more wins in this league if we had an athletic QB and ran the spread. This so called Saints offense is too cerebral for college kids to master.

What I wish we would do is adopt a philosophy of "play the first half to determine how you play the second half." Yes, I just heard this Bruce Arians philosophy on the NFL pre-game show, but it makes so much sense. Don't make risky throws in the first half. Feel out your opponent, find their weaknesses and your strengths against their schemes, then exploit them later in the game. Don't put yourself in a bad position in the first half and pull out all stops in the second half.
Had we done this the GTech, game and certainly this (Homecoming vs. Memphis) game were possible wins. In other games we've shown all we have in the first half and had nothing in the tank in the second half.
Houston was the team's best performance of the year. But to expect that week in and week out, with this team and coaching staff, is unrealistic. I'd much prefer keep it close and close to the vest in the first half and go balls to the wall in the second and see where we end up.
