Best part of the article was them naming "Louisiana-Lafayette" by their proper name.tpstulane wrote: ↑Tue Dec 04, 2018 8:22 pm Good news: We’re not 78 and rank ahead of ULL.

I think it's great that our successful effort at branding our sports teams as Louisiana bothers so many of our competitors.DfromCT wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 9:23 amBest part of the article was them naming "Louisiana-Lafayette" by their proper name.tpstulane wrote: ↑Tue Dec 04, 2018 8:22 pm Good news: We’re not 78 and rank ahead of ULL.

77. Louisiana-Lafayette (7–6)
Exact statement from the posted web site.
Looks like the rankings got it right.

If it was successful, you wouldn't have major sites still using Louisiana-Lafayette.cajunfanatico wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 11:48 am

Example: Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. Do you think there's anyone, anywhere in the media that still calls it Enron Field?

We'll just have to agree to disagree on whether or not the effort can be considered successful..RobertM320 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 1:17 pmIf it was successful, you wouldn't have major sites still using Louisiana-Lafayette.cajunfanatico wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 11:48 am

With ESPN, CBS, the NCAA, Fox, Yahoo, NBC, just to name a few, calling us Louisiana, we've been very successful IMHO. . Heck, even Alabama and Miss State of the mighty SEC agree with our branding effort and list us as Louisiana on their schedules.
To be sure there are still some sites that use Louisiana-Lafayette, but I suspect that has more to do with a failure to update their templates than any in-house opposition to the idea. The heavy lifting has been done and the war is all but over as AD Maggard is in clean-up mode on this issue these days. Having said all that, if it makes you feel better to think otherwise, who am I to stand in your way?

So long as you don't call yourselves "The University of Louisiana" without the "at Lafayette" I don't care. UL-M has a legitimate gripe, though.

A legitimate gripe? How so? There's absolutely nothing illegal about referring to our sports teams as Louisiana, nothing.. Or are you suggesting that ULM be able to select both their brand and ours?
While they may not be happy that we got out ahead of them on this one, ULM has officially settled on the brand they wish to use. It's ULM. We respect their decision..

In the 90's UL-M tried EXACTLY the branding that UL-L is trying now and was bitch slapped by the legislature, if memory serves correctly. And at that time (1999) USL was re=named and U-La-La was born (or re-born). I'm sure others, local to the state have more accurate memories..cajunfanatico wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 3:46 pmA legitimate gripe? How so? Besides, your own University Website refers to the University as Louisiana-Lafayette, as it should.

I believe you're mistaken, on multiple levels Dave, especially about ULM and the state legislature..DfromCT wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 5:12 pmIn the 90's UL-M tried EXACTLY the branding that UL-L is trying now and was bitch slapped by the legislature, if memory serves correctly. In April of 1984 the Louisiana Board of Reagents for state schools not named Louisiana State offically voted to allow USL to become the University of Louisiana.......by something like an 11-1 vote IIRC. And if memory serves, this was the same process by which other state universities had changed their names before us.
Louisiana State immediately had a calf at the new name and took the issue to the state legislature which, after a few months, retroactively changed the law and told us we could not be the University of Louisiana. I think most would agree, though perhaps only in private, that Louisiana State's concern had virtually nothing to do with other state school's interests, but their own interests instead.
Anyway, in the late 1990's after repeated efforts at the state legislative level to get back what we believed we'd legally attained in 1984, the state legislature finally declared that if at least one other state school would agree to be called University of Lousiana - XXXX, then they'd allow the name change. Northeastern Louisiana agreed to change their name provided they be allowed to join the Sun Belt and play FBS football.
Years later, after we began the push to brand our athletic programs as the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, ULM did indeed attempt the same for a short while but gave up quickly and decided to go with ULM because we were too far out in front of them, I'd imagine.
Do Cajun fans and many others refer to us as UL or the University of Louisiana? Most certainly. Nothing illegal about that as the law applies to the university, not the general population. As per the law, the university on all its official letterhead and other official documents, goes by the assigned name of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Athletics? Louisiana baby!!!
