Since he has been here his recruiting has been really good and our offense has been our strength. Our offense this year has been a pleasant surprise. He has added Coach Brian Harris to the staff this year who has done a great job with the defense. We have only made 1 error outside of our pitchers and catchers.
On the other hand, our pitching has been a disaster for 2 years. Last year our pitchers regressed from previous years. This year Jewett brought in a bunch of quality arms and they can’t throw the ball over the plate. I still believe Jewett can do great things here because of his ability to recruit at a school like Tulane. The previous staff could not do that. But if they can’t get this pitching staff figured out, he may have to make some changes.
Based on what has his recruiting been very good here?
He brought in like 20 new guys and the pitching staff is still awful. And then the everyday players are mostly Pierce recruits

Based on their ratings coming in. Doesn’t always mean each guy will pan out. I think some of those freshmen pitchers you are talking about have some of the best stuff on the team (Bates, pellerin). Haven’t seen enough of the others yet. Jewett was forced to go the juco route with much of his first class. If you look at the commitments he has for the next few years, they should be really good classes.

The ratings for the class currently on campus were not good. The ranking for next years class is 49. We didn’t bring in Jewett for recruiting classes right around number 50 in the country. That’s not really good enough.

Correct. The ratings for the class on campus were not great because it doesn’t include the juco guys. He was forced to go that way because they needed some experience that could play right away. As for next years class, 49 is a really good class for us. We will never be top 10-20 in recruiting rankings because of scholarship limits and cost of tuition. We need to recruit a handful of highly rated guys each year, not miss on them, and then fill in the roster. A few years of that and we can compete on the highest level. We will never be as deep as the LSUs and UFs of the world. We need to hope our starters are really good and we don’t have injuries. That’s just the way it is. Even our best teams (01 and 05) were not as deep. Lack of pitching depth is what caught up with us in Omaha.

It doesn’t include the JUCOs but they don’t look to be that good either as a whole.

49th is ok. You don’t hire a guy based solely on his recruiting ability if the best he can do is the 49th best class. 49th isn’t far off from what Pierce brought in and you said he couldn’t recruit here.

05 team was deep as hell too.
