From the time we were established in 1980, the Tulane Greenbackers have lived up to our motto: “Support Tulane athletics…and have fun doing it!” Since that time, the club has maintained its reputation as Tulane University’s most loyal and active athletic booster club.

The Greenbackers is an all-male, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting all Tulane athletic teams. Although a small percentage of our members are Tulane graduates, all share a deep love and devotion for Tulane athletics. We meet every Thursday night, year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving week, Christmas week, and whenever there is a Tulane home sporting event on a Thursday night. Our dues are the same as they were when we started in 1980 - $50 per year.

We have interesting guest speakers at our meetings, including Tulane coaches and other university athletic department officials, high school coaches, members of the media, former Tulane athletes and anyone else to whom our members might enjoy listening. Some of our best meetings are when there is no speaker and we engage in spirited discussions about the current happenings in the world of Tulane sports, or sports in general.

We meet at Sportsbeat Pub, 3330 Ridgelake in Metairie, LA. We meet in a private room adjacent to the bar that includes a large flat screen for game watching. The bar features great food, reasonable drink prices, darts, and a friendly, sports-themed atmosphere.

One of the Greenbackers’ primary functions is to encourage attendance at Tulane athletic events. Most of our members are season ticket holders in multiple sports, and several have the Tulane Super Fan package, which includes season tickets to football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and volleyball, and includes a donation to the Tulane Athletics Fund. Several Greenbackers are also members of the world famous Tulane Baseball Grounds Krewe.

The Greenbackers were originally created to be a Metairie/Kenner based club. We have grown to include members from all over the metropolitan New Orleans area (Metairie, Kenner, New Orleans, River Ridge, Harahan, the West Bank), St. Bernard Parish, the North Shore, the River Parishes, and Bayou country; as well as members from Mississippi, Texas, California and Florida.

The Greenbackers lead the famous Tulane Hullabaloo cheer after every Tulane score in football, hang the green Ks at the first base rail to record every Tulane strikeout at the baseball games, and raucously cheer from right behind the Tulane bench in men’s and women’s basketball, as well as offer support at TU tennis and golf matches, volleyball games, swimming meets, and soon – bowling and sand volleyball matches.

We’ve had numerous epic “Road Trips” to Tulane away games in football, baseball, basketball, women’s basketball, bowl games, NCAA Regionals and to the College World Series. Whether they end up like a road trip in Animal House or a trip to Walley World in National Lampoon’s Vacation – Greenbacker road trips are always an adventure.

Members of the Greenbackers invented Superdome tailgating, and we still tailgate at every home football game on the top of the Claiborne Avenue (West) side of the Superdome parking lot (Southwest Garage). We sponsor a yearly Chest of Cheer liquor raffle in which we give away a large ice chest filled with bottles of premium liquor. We sell tickets at all the home games and give the prize away before kickoff of the last home game of the season.

In addition, the Greenbackers support the athletic department in several other ways. In the past we have painted the dugouts, put nameplates on lockers, cooked at a variety of events (golf tournaments, tennis matches, 5K race, coaches clinics) and anything else Tulane asks us to do.

We give two annual awards to Tulane senior athletes. The awards honor all former Greenbackers who have passed away. They were named for two Greenbackers from our early years, Chris Ehren and C.J Lenz.

Chris Ehren showed great courage and determination in battling cancer, so we give the Chris Ehren Award to a male athlete who has shown great courage in overcoming obstacles during his career at Tulane. Some of the past recipients of this award are Mark Benedetto, Kim Lewis, Shaun King, Matt Forte, Troy Kropog, and this past year’s winner, Joe Kemp.

C.J. Lenz was the Greenbacker who first pushed and prodded the club into becoming more supportive of women’s sports at Tulane. Therefore, we give the C.J. Lenz award to a female athlete who best embodies the attributes that C.J had – love of Tulane, love of teammates, and love of life. Some of our past winners include Keisha Johnson, Rodnelle Hadley, Lacey Vicknair, Megan Valicevic, and this past year’s winner, Brett Benzio.

As we continue our long, strange trip, we forge on in the eternal pursuit of supporting the Green Wave. Through thick and thin, good times and bad, in sickness and in health, ‘till death do we part, the Greenbackers will be there. Roll Wave!
