He turned down an extension because he wanted more money for his staff.

That turned into a slippery slope. He turned down the extension when his agent (a former ECU Board of Regents member) told him not to sign and let him negotiate more $$ for his assistants in a better deal. The season went downhill, to a 5-7 record, and the re-negotiated extension was never completed.
