The American's out of conference record after week one:

4-4

vs P5 teams: 1-2

Upset wins: Temple over Vandy 37-7
Upset losses: UTSA over Houston 24-7

I think the AAC should have been 6-2 this week. Had UCF started Hollman we would've notched a fifth victory (after he came into the game UCF outscored Penn State 21-13). They should be able to right the ship now that they found their starting quarterback. Houston's problems are much deeper, and, while that is bad for the American, it could bode well for Tulane down the lone. UCONN and SMU's losses were predictable and unsurprising.

Next week's out of conference games (P5 games in bold)

Stonybrook
UConn

SMU
N Texas

Oklahoma
Tulsa

Navy
Temple

Maryland
S Florida

Ga Tech
Tulane

E. Carolina
S. Carolina

Grambling State
Houston

Memphis
UCLA

Apart from GT game, keep an eye on UM-UCLA. Mora is definitely the flavor of the week as concerns early season football commentary. Lots of speculation about UCLA winning PAC 12 and even making the football final four.

UCLA is a 25 point favorite. (I thought it might open higher.) 9pm CDT kickoff for those of you who may have awakened from your post GT game nap.

If UM plays UCLA well in the Rose Bowl look for the UCLA media balloon to start deflating quickly. If it's like Baylor-SMU, I bet UCLA starts getting votes to be number one in the polls the following week.

2-7 in out-of-conference play this week for a dismal 6-11 over two weeks. This includes 0-5 vs P5 and 0-3 vs ranked teams. Now 1-7 vs P5 teams. This is looking awful.

ECU beat Va Tech 28-21. S. Florida was crushed by NC State, UCF was crushed by Mizzou, Boise whipped UConn, BYU topped Houston, Cincy beat Toledo.

Tulsa plays Florida International and Tulane plays SELA (we know that).

After this week, the American is 2-9 vs the BCS and 1-8 vs ranked teams.

On the bright side the AAC was 1-0 vs. Southland Conference opponents this week. :)

Two AAC teams receiving votes in this week's AP Top 25, ECU, and Cincy. Memphis received two votes in the coaches poll.

The highest rated teams in the AAC in the Massey Composite Rankings are Cincy at 39, and ECU at 40. UCF is 54. Next years entry, Navy, is 51. But for this season, only three AAC teams warrant a slot in the top half of FBS football.

6-2 in out-of-conference play this week, improving the overall record to 15-18. 1-2 vs P5, improving the P5 record to 3-11. Still terrible there. We, obviously, didn't help matters.

The American has its first Top 25 team of the 2014 season in East Carolina. They are 23rd in the AP poll, and 24th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Congrats to East Carolina.

Cincy is the only other American team receiving votes. If they upset Ohio State (a big if, their D just doesn't look that good), they could vault into the Top 25.
