On Tuesday morning, a literal dark cloud hovered above the building that houses the office of University of Tulsa athletic director Derrick Gragg.

At the same time that the TU campus was soaked with rain, and as Gragg provided a fairly startling revelation about his department, there seemed also to be a figurative dark cloud above Golden Hurricane sports.

Not true, Gragg said. TU’s current budget situation is a difficult circumstance, he acknowledged, but not a crisis.

What would qualify as a startling revelation?

Specific numbers aren’t known, but recent budget cuts have affected all aspects of TU’s operation. In an effort to avoid a reduction in services for student-athletes, Gragg said, Hurricane football coach Philip Montgomery, men’s basketball coach Frank Haith and Gragg himself all have accepted pay cuts.

At the major-college level, this could be unprecedented — that a football coach, men’s basketball coach and an AD simultaneously and willingly absorbed salary reductions for the sake of the greater good of a money-starved school’s sports programs.

Wow.
Hopefully the new TV contract saves the league from further cuts.

Side note:
Frank Haith is an Elon Alum. Rick Jones helped him get the job as student manager for the basketball team after being cut trying out for baseball. Similar to Coach Schloss he became a student assistant and then rose up through the ranks to eventually becoming a HC.

That article quoted a whole lot more TV money for the AAC teams than any of us have been told. (TU in this case refers to Tulsa University)
TU also is hopeful that the next American Athletic Conference television deal is more lucrative. At the end of the 2016-17 college sports calendar, the Orlando Sentinel reported, South Florida received the most significant share at $8.9 million. TU’s share was $4.9 million.
We've been told the TV money is $1.9 million/per institution. Maybe the scribe from the Orlando Sentinel was counting bowl money, continued payouts from the Big East schools, etc. But something is drastically off in his/her numbers.

Sounds like Bowl money might have been added at the end there.

That's more than bowl money. No school gets $7 million for a bowl game when they're splitting it with their conference, despite the actual participant getting the largest piece of the pie. That's a very big reason Notre Dame remains independent, they don't share bowl $$ with the ACC.

Maybe he was wrong then. Not sure but here’s our bowl payout.

American Athletic Conference

$4 million for UCF’s berth in the Peach Bowl

Plus equal share with the Group of 5 bowl money of $81.32 million collective pool

According to the records, the American earned $42.179 million in postseason tournaments, including money generated from the NCAA Tournament, revenue from appearances in bowl games and a share of the College Football Playoff as mandated by the playoff management group.

$42 million divided by 12 teams = $3.5 mill per school.

They are correct - USF is still getting payments from the exit fees from the prior Big East teams. It looks like if football-only Navy is excluded and the 3 leftovers are excluded, there is about a $2M difference between the remaining teams with Houston at the top and Tulane at the bottom.

"n 2016-17, South Florida received $8.877 million from the AAC, followed by UConn ($8.088 million), Cincinnati ($7.659 million), Houston ($5.410 million), Tulsa ($4.937 million) and Temple ($4.920 million). USF, UConn and Cincinnati are still receiving payments as part of the $70 million in exit fees for being former members of the Big East Conference, according to the Hartford Courant.

Memphis ($4.684 million), UCF ($4.042 million) East Carolina ($3.737 million), SMU ($3.701 million), Tulane ($3.587 million) and Navy ($2.623 million) account for the rest of the league’s revenue breakdown."

My point was that the article quoted earlier in the thread called all that money "TV money". The TV portion of those revenues made up a small percentage for most of the conference members, but a large percentage for Tulane, who was at the bottom of the food chain.

Again, TU, in this article was referring to Tulsa University, not Tulane.
