"UNC hero gets standing ovation at 8 A M class"
Who says athletics and academics are mutually exclusive....
School is supposed to be fun and decent athletics makes a huge impact on the fun factor. And it undoubtedly would increase alumni support from the the checkbooks of alumni proud of more than "great academics"....

President Fitts , B of A , it's put up or forever hold your peace time . Make Tulane ATHLETICS relevant and top 30 again .
Very bad example. UNC is still under investigation for years of fraudulent academic courses for athletes who weren't required to go to class but instead turn in one paper that a "tutor" completed for them..
I get your point but UNC is the wrong "school " to highlight.

They've been going after UNC for SEVEN YEARS. Time for the high and mighty NCAA to make their case or drop it. Seven years is way too long to drag this out. And it's not like the NCAA itself is always looking out for the best interests of the student athletes. As soon as there is a decision between money versus integrity of the academic side of the equation, the NCAA follows the money.Jaxwave wrote:Very bad example. Keep in mind, I'm a Duke fan.

D, I will never support any of your arguments anymore. "keep in mind, I'm a Duke fan." Must be that little blue devil on your shoulder whispering in your ear that needs to be replaced with a little angry waveDfromCT wrote:They've been going after UNC for SEVEN YEARS. In all seriousness, NCAA is a joke. If they had subpoena powers this case would be gift wrapped by now.

Usually, UNC athletes don't go to class but still get A's. Perhaps the standing ovation was because he showed up for class.

First and foremost, I'm a (long suffering) Tulane fan!GreenPuddleSplash wrote:D, I will never support any of your arguments anymore. "keep in mind, I'm a Duke fan." I mention that I'm a Duke fan because Duke's biggest rival is Carolina. Why do I root for Duke? Well, my brother in law went there and was manager of the basketball team Coack K's first years. My sister has her MBA from Duke (and her PhD from Wake Forest, but I don't root for Wake!). I spent my senior year of HS in North Carolina and was a Tar Heels fan until a few years out of college, but crossed over to the Devils.
I would bet the standing ovation would have happened at 300 of the 330 D1 basketball schools. Maybe not at Tulane, but I strongly doubt that a school needs to be considered a athletics factory to get that kind of reaction. And for those that don't know, UNC is ranked significantly higher than Tulane academically.
Keep in mind, we stormed the President's house when we one a second round NIT game in the early 80's. And, no, the NIT was NOT bigger than the NCAA at that time. That had changed at least 10 years prior.
