So, presume the Big XII skips expansion, and the AAC decides to expand to help it survive another round of realignment. In this scenario, the American adds Boise State and BYU. Under this scenario, Navy is moved to the East, where, they belong, geographically speaking. How much would this improve the American? Well, the American West gets a huge boost. Using Sagarin ratings and his weighting, the new AAC West would include, Boise State, Houston, Memphis, BYU, Tulsa, Tulane and SMU.
The SEC East has a Sagarin rating of 73.68.
The American west would have a Sagarin rating of 73.56.
I will be back shortly to see how Navy improves the American east...

The AAC east would consist of Navy, S Florida, UCF, E Carolina, Temple, Cincinnati, and UConn.
It would only improve modestly under this circumstance from 68.01 to 68.88. So, tbe problem here is that there would be an extreme competitive imbalance between the two divisions. However, both divisions would be well ahead of any of the G4, and would likely have an overall power rating above 70. Cracking that mark in the Sagarin Ratings would be a huge milestone. No non-AQ conference in the BCS days, that I can remember ever cracked 70. And no non-P5 conference has yet to crack 70. However, the AAC west, as it exists today, does crack 70.
Conclusion: adding BYU and Boise would help enhance the conference's argument for Power status. BYU and Boise State also bring sizable fanbases to the conference enhancing its brand and on field performance.

Navy will stay in the west. The league wanted them and they wanted to be in the West for recruiting purposes as they hit Texas hard. That's the deal. I don't see BYU joining anything other than a P5. Boise would be a nice add. Maybe get Air Force as a football only member like Navy.

So, here is a 16 team AAC where SDSU and Air Force are added:
Here, to enhance competitive balance we will move Houston to the East. We could move Memphis, which geographically makes more sense, but I am aiming for maximum competitive balance between the two divisions rather than geographical correctness. SDSU and Air Force will join the AAC west.
The Sagarin Ratings now have both divisions over 70.
AAC east: 70.47
AAC West: 71.52

the hell with those big east schools, let them choke on their rosary beads....The AAC needs to be proactivce, but only with schools that sponsor all major sports, unlike SMU who does not have a Baseball team.... Boise and BYU would be headliners, but like many, I do not think BYU is joining any conference except a PEE 5....Bring in Boise, Colorado State, NIU and New Mexico ( I hate to bring this up but UTSA and San Antonio should get a hard look, just because of the TV sets)...go to a 16 team league with 4 Quads, I already posted this but do not know how to retrieve my previous posting. U have 3 in Quad games 2 X-over games from the other 3 Quads and 3 OOC games...how damn difficult can this be....I am damn bored and ready to be the AAC Commish in charge of Expansiontpstulane wrote:AAC Expansion talk back in the headlines.

Add Air Force and Army Football only. UTSA is very promising, strong candidate to become 3rd flagship in Texas. Frank Wilson has them moving in the right direction. If you can't get BYU/BSU then go for UMASS.
"National Division":
Navy
Army
Air Force
BYU
"Yankee Division"
UCONN
UMASS
Temple
Cincy
"Texas Division"
SMU
Houston
Tulsa
UTSA
"Dixie Division"
Tulane

17 teams makes a balanced scheduling nightmare.....I do not understand the love for Air Force, they bring zero to the table, except a nice place to visit every few years....too many service academies, in my opinion Navy is one too many....Ruski wrote:golfnut69 wrote:the hell with those big east schools, let them choke on their rosary beads....The AAC needs to be proactivce, but only with schools that sponsor all major sports, unlike SMU who does not have a Baseball team.... Yeah to make it 16 you could move Memphis to Yankee and leave out UMASS and call it "Big Dance Division", just liked this setup. Or move Tulane to Texas division for UTSA.golfnut69 wrote:17 teams makes a balanced scheduling nightmare.....I do not understand the love for Air Force, they bring zero to the table, except a nice place to visit every few years....too many service academies, in my opinion Navy is one too many....Ruski wrote:golfnut69 wrote:the hell with those big east schools, let them choke on their rosary beads....The AAC needs to be proactivce, but only with schools that sponsor all major sports, unlike SMU who does not have a Baseball team.... The reason for all the service academies is their national brand power. Moving the Army-Navy game into conference alone would be huge for TV. This year the game had 7.9 million viewers, Houston-Oklahoma had 5.71 million. The average SEC game has 3.4 million. Over the last two years Navy has had 28.7 million viewers only second to Houston (29.9) among all non-P5. Army is number 5 behind Houston, Navy, BYU (24.2), and Temple (19.5). Air Force has had a very respectable 7.2 million, only behind Boise, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, and Toledo. Tulane by the way has had 1 million TOTAL football viewers over the last 2 years...
Also Air Force is a solid team performance wise over the last 20 years, 11 bowls since 2000 alone. But the fact they haven't finished in the top25 since 1998 may explain their down TV numbers the last couple years.
The AAC is firmly in no mans land between P5 and G5 right now. It needs eyeballs and impactful branding to get the kind of money that will push it into legit P5 territory. Bringing in all 3 service academies makes the AAC truly the most "American" conference.

So I would like to know, why San Diego State, BYU, Boise, CSU or even Air Force would want to uproot their athletics to join a conference that offers about the same money, better exposure, same bowls but a vast increase in travel costs? All this to play teams that they have no history with? They (the western schools) would have to figure out a home for their Olympic sports as well. Then, though the B12 seems more stable, the entire AAC is full of teams dying to get out, which is hardly a dream conference for the western G5 schools.
This all seems well and good on paper, but right now the AAC has not separated themselves (and remains somewhat unstable) to the point that the better western G5's would be willing to jump ship.
As for BYU, that's an entirely different animal. Their TV contract is currently more than double the per team AAC value. Their schedule is also basically booked for 5 years. It's a non starter unless the AAC gets a big TV revenue boost.

I agree. It's why I'd focus on Army, UMASS, UTSA. In the footprint and already fit the AAC model. Use Army's inclusion to pressure Air Force in. That's the only way I see getting a Boise, losing Air Force would be pretty big for the MWC.mbawavefan12 wrote:So I would like to know, why San Diego State, BYU, Boise, CSU or even Air Force would want to uproot their athletics to join a conference that offers about the same money, better exposure, same bowls but a vast increase in travel costs? In a weak MWC, New Mexico has made it past the first round of the NCAA twice since 1999. They offer very limited TV potential. Albuquerque is small and poor, less than 1 million in the metro area and no reason to expect significant growth. This year the team went 8-4 and had home attendance of 20,221, 19,852, 20,090 (against #19 BSU), 18,099, 17,290, 16,698. I'd expect better of a small private like Tulane or Tulsa. Compared to UTSA this year during a 6-6 year; 22,380, 29,035, 19,818, 23,633, 19,553, 23,807.golfnut69 wrote:New Mexico is a better fit than over all...it sponsors all sports, a state U...pretty good basketball...if ya want to look at another "state school'...Utah State
The area provides nothing as far as recruiting talent. I just don't see any appeal other than former basketball glory. The conference has plenty of teams that offer former glory, we need potential and energy for the future!
Utah State is a better school with maybe better potential for football but it's so far away! And what the heck is Logan, Utah?
Both of these schools stretch the geographic footprint for very limited benefit. I think UTSA offers a lot more, even if they have zero history.

Neither Boise nor BYU would come to the AAC. In addition, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume that any member of the MWC would be unlikely to come. That leaves few options, and, because of that, the AAC commissioner indicated that if the AAC lost two programs, it would be unlikely to expand.golfnut69 wrote:when speaking of TV Markets, there are a few schools to go after...Colorado State or Air Force...UTSA....UMass...Northern Illinois....there are not many to choose from, but from that list 4 schools with TV market potential...Boise, outside of a football rep brings nothing...BYU brings many fans, and many issues, no play on Sunday, no sex b4 marriage and 25 year old redshirt freshman...SDSU brings decent sports but damn it is a long way to San Diego....from Austin it is a 3 hour flight, without headwind !!!
At this point, the AAC shouldn't admit any program that isn't consistently playing at a relatively high level in football and basketball that could foreseeable continue to play at that level indefinitely, regardless of any other factors.

I don't think you can count out Mountain West conference teams. In the long run, the Mountain West won't be as valuable for media rights as the American Conference. The American has more exposure than the MWC. Except for fluke runs like W Michigan this year, the dominant conference for New Years Day Bowls is going to be the American.
The Mountain West isn't what it once was. Both Boise and BYU would upgrade themselves to join the AAC. It would be mutually beneficial for BYU and Boise to join the AAC. Whereas it would only benefit the MWC for BYU to join it. BYU woukd basically get nothing.
In the end, it is best for everyone for BYU, Boise and AAC to join together.

Sorry to say but the best way to upgrade the strength of the AAC (in terms of football/basketball) is to contract rather than expand. Simply kicking out Tulane would probably do more than expanding with any of the teams mentioned. I guess the Catholic schools in the Big East were right after all. Sure I'm a Debbie Downer after the disappointing football season and the dismal start to the basketball season but seriously, being a perennial bottom feeder in the conference doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon. Thank goodness there's no such thing as relegation in college athletics.
Shortly, you hit the nail on the head. Without significant improvement quickly, I feel like we need to worry more about being evicted than the conference expanding. I didn't like either the football or basketball hire by our new AD and still don't. Continue to be embarrassed to be a fan of Tulane athletics and continue to ignore the weekly phone calls from the university. My feeling is if the school is run anywhere near like the athletic dept is run, they don't deserve my support. They have never understood that the athletic dept is a reflection of the school.

Well, the Big East did kick out Temple. I fear the same thing could happen to Tulane. Every time I watch our pathetic football offense I weep tears shaped like Rich Rod.netshorty wrote:Sorry to say but the best way to upgrade the strength of the AAC (in terms of football/basketball) is to contract rather than expand.
