Non-subscribers will soon be limited to viewing stories on theAdvocate.com
Once a certain number of views is reached a paywall will kick in.
I guess their free Ad model not generating enough views to support it.

Who do they think they are, the New York Times?

It was a daily pleasure to grab a copy of the Times Pic in the morning along with a cup of coffee and read Peter Finney's view of the sports world. He once wrote that you should always read the sports section first as it documented man's accomplishments whereas the front page was relegated to reporting mankind's failures. Now the Picayune is in the same group as K&B, Schwegmann's, Rosenberg's, Ponchartrain Beach, Maison Blanche, Godchaux's, D.H. Holmes, Wembley Tie and Krauss (ain't dere no more).

Once or twice each week I would walk the block from my office at Wemco to the Times Pic on Broad St. and have lunch at their employee's cafeteria. It was surprisingly good. I learned quickly not to sit in the brown colored chairs as they were reserved for press operators, often with ink soiled trousers. I would often find myself sitting at the table next to Peter Finney and he would always have a kind word and sometimes a funny story. May these mental ghosts RIP.

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing. As a kid I would ride to the Saints games when played at Tulane stadium in the Finney’s VW Van. Good memories.

Not surprised. I canceled my subscription at the beginning of the year. It was stupid from day one to give your content away for free. It's why the Advocate is now making you get one. About time.

I just experienced the "must be a subscriber" system. I couldn't read content posted via a link in another thread. I'm sure I will buy an online subscription, just not this afternoon as I'm busy with my kids wrapping up an XBox game about to go out for lunch.

They probably going to start charging for Nola.com since they bought that one also.

They will and it will be the New Orleans site for all their articles. So you'll only pay once.

Based on European, and now U.S., reproduction rates, men and women aren’t doing much procreating. They rather “hang out” in groups and play video games.

After crapping on Tulane for years, I have to say I find it satisfying to see the TP “do the slow roll” and die—while Tulane carries on.

Very interesting New York Times story on the struggle between the Advocate and the Picayune:
The event that would set off the New Orleans newspaper war took place seven years ago to the month. In May 2012, Advance Local announced it was cutting back publication of The Times-Picayune from seven days a week to three, making New Orleans the largest American city at that time without a daily newspaper. About one-third of the paper’s staff was laid off.

I have noticed that nola.com is no longer giving me the black pay-wall screen when I link to a story. Anyone else notice this? Wonder if they've abandoned the idea of charging $9.99 (gouging) per month for online access. My guess is that only a handful of people subscribed and the Advocate was forced to rethink their strategy.

It comes and goes. Sometimes I'm able to read stories, other times it asks me to buy an online subscription.

Nola is terrible now. Not even close to what it once was. Neglected stepchild. Use Brave browser and get paid to browse avoid their ads. I now get paid for clicking Ads. Donate to Gotula with your digital dollars you earn browsing.

I discovered an app called News Break. It’s really a great App. You can find it on google or Apple.

Better than the NOLA.com/ advocate on line news.

Tell me what you think. I will never pay NOLA.com for their sports stories.
